What We Recommend

Each week at Girl-Who-Reads.com, we share our thoughts on what we have recently read and we read a lot of excellent books. In case you have trouble narrowing down what to read, I have a round-up of what book we recommend reading this month. I hope you find a new book or two (or more!) to enjoy.

For those that like savings, I have a Barnes & Nobles Friends & Family coupon I can share with you. It's good this weekend only, in store and online (exclusions apply). Just reply to this message and I will forward you the coupon (good for 20% off).

We would love to hear about what books have been consuming you lately. We might even choose to highlight it on our site.

cover Echoes of FamilyOne of Susan's top favorite reads this year is Echoes of Family by Barbara Claypole White.

"This is an authentic and compassionate novel about mental illness. The main character is bi-polar and through her struggles, we learn how it affects not only her but includes everyone around her.  This is a fantastic novel that will stay with you long after you've finished it."

cover House of LeavesWith Halloween rapidly approaching, MK French is recommending a horror novel: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

"This book is a typesetter's nightmare, with a story within a story within a story format. It's utterly terrifying, especially if you have a vivid imagination. There's the track of a house with dimensions that change, including a labyrinthine hollow that all but devours people that enter. There's the track with the narrator getting consumed by this story, and an unknown editor commenting on the stories presented. It's a fascinating puzzle that really makes you question reality."
cover Bury MeLike MK French, I went with a book that would make a great Halloween read: Bury Me by Tara Sivec.

"It's a captivating thriller set in a prison turned museum. The main character, who remembers little about who she is, has horrific nightmares as her mind tries to fill in the missing pieces."

cover John Dies at the EndOur newest reviewer Emily Morley is recommending the horror comedy (that seems like an oxymoron to me!) John Dies at the End by David Wong.

"I picked up this book just to see if the title would come true, and it became one of the books I recommend to everyone. It's deliciously weird--featuring a drug called soy sauce and a dog that just can't die. You'll get to the end knowing that whatever the hell just happened for 350 pages, it was awesome."
cover Twelve Days of ChristmasThere are always so many wonderful Christmas books - I was still reading Christmas books in February! If you want to get a jump on it this year, Elisabeth recommends Twelve Days of Christmas by Debbie Macomber.

"Just released on the 4th, this book is the perfect romance to read as we head into the holiday seasons. In the book, Julia is a bright and perky type of person while her neighbor who lives across the hall seems like a real Ebeneezer Scrooge. Julia decides to do an experiment and "kill him with kindness." Read all about her adventure and what happens when you get to know someone you think is the ultimate pessimist. I am pretty positive once you read this book you will agree that this is another hit for Ms. Macomber and I wouldn't be surprised if the Hallmark channel makes this into a movie for their Christmas line up. "
cover The Way of KingsHave you ever downloaded an ebook and then took a while to get around to reading it? Chris's recommendation is one of those.

"I came across The Way of Kings browsing through epic fantasy on Kindle, and ended up downloading a copy a while ago and never reading it. I started this summer, and I’m impressed by the depth and detail of the book. It apparently took Sanderson years to write, and in true epic fashion spans millennia and numerous character points-of-view. I’m only a few chapters in, but so far it’s been pretty interesting, and I’m looking forward to continuing the monstrous tale that Sanderson has spun."
cover Ross PoldarkHave you watched Poldark? Season 2 is currently playing on PBS. Aiden Turner, who plays main character Ross Poldark, is so easy on the eyes. I love the show. Kathleen is also a fan, but she did what good book lovers do and read the 12 book series by Winston Graham. She highly recommends the books.

cover Magic for BeginnersAlison, like a true avid reader, couldn't choose just one book to recommend reading this month.

The first recommendation is a collection of short stories of magical realism. Magic for Beginners by Kelly link cover Huw the Bardmay be a great choice to keep you entertained between trick or treaters on Halloween night.

Her second choice is historical fantasy Huw the Bard by Connie J. Jasperson. You can read more about what she thought of it here.
