October 2016

From the Vice-Principals' Desk

It is an honour to have another opportunity to write this newsletter to you. The third term is gone and fourth term has begun. Dr Mnisi is back from his sabbatical and we trust that he is refreshed and rejuvenated to take us forward.

This term we celebrate the 75th birthday of UBI. Please join us on Sunday, 13 November for our Afternoon of Song and 75th Anniversary Celebration. Looking back where the institution started, we are ever thankful to God for all these years that men and women have been trained. Many souls have come to Christ through UBI’s ministries.

We are grateful to see that UBI has maintained its culture of teaching the Word of God without compromise or modification. The Word of God is being taught both academically and devotionally to provoke a change in the life of students and lecturers. My thanks to the faculty -- your work is never without notice and at the right time you will reap what you have sown.

Last term we shared that we were trusting God for a new librarian and God answered our prayers; Kezia Noble has joined the UBI staff as our librarian. I am told it is the first time we have a librarian who is not a missionary, and we trust God that this change will be sustainable. We are grateful for the maintenance staff and their excellent work of changing the iron roof sheets on our buildings and for water tank stands. We are grateful to all who contributed in order for these projects to happen.

Thanks to Wes Spradley and to Richard and Sharon Hampton, our guest lecturers for term three. We welcome the Barthelemy family who have just joined us from the States. They will study isiZulu before beginning teaching responsibilities.

We are continuously asking for prayer even in this busy fourth term with its many activities and programmes. You are warmly invited to the Graduation and Motto Service on 26 November 2016. Thank you once more for all your prayers and support. May the Lord be glorified at all times.

Yours in His service,
Xolani A. Nkosi
Vice-principal

UBI in the Community

As part of our 75th Anniversary year, UBI has made an effort to be a part of the surrounding community. The UBI choir assisted in the Nelson Mandela Marathon in August by passing out refreshments and singing songs to runners at the top of "Struggle Hill" behind UBI. We were pleased to see alumnus Pastor David Mhlanga pass by as he participated in the 42 km race. Current student M Msomi is pictured above with his medal for completing the 10 km race. Then on 1 October, the UBI Choir and Marimba Band entertained shoppers at the Hilton Quarry Shopping Centre for the morning, beginning with a flash mob of the national anthem. A Youth Ministries Textbook in isiZulu

UBI Publishing has been working for some time on a textbook to train youth leaders. Mrs D Mbanjwa is writing this book based on notes from classes taught at UBI as well as other sources. Additional chapters have been contributed by discipleship mentors from iThemba projects in Sweetwaters, where some of our alumni work. Please pray God's for guidance for the final editing of the book.
UBI will be hosting a youth leaders training Saturday, 22 October from 9h00 to 15h30.  The aim of this program is to give those who work with youth the mindset, knowledge and skills needed to be effective. It will be led by Brad Hawkins and his team from Word of Life. The cost is R150 which includes lunch and workshop materials. Contact the office on 082 4477877 or email admin@ubi.ac.za before 19 October to register. For more information click here.

Staff: We are thankful for God's provision of a librarian as well as new full-time staff members. Additional full-time staff are still needed.
UBI Council meeting: Pray for good attendance and a growing sense of ownership from the UBI Council as they meet on Friday, 14 October.
Youth Ministry Training:  There will be a youth ministry training at UBI on 22 October. Pray that many will attend and be inspired to grow in their ability to lead youth.
Year-end events: Please pray for the anniversary celebrations as well as graduation week services, motto and graduation exercises.
