This compassionate documentary by Linda Ohama chronicles the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident that devastated the coastal Japanese region of Tohoku. Cinematically beautiful and socially significant, the film portrays humanity in the face of disaster, and it achieves a balance between the intellectual and the spiritual by conveying both candid information and poetic observations on the fallout.
There is a volunteer position available before and after the screening to sell DVDs. If you are available and interested, please contact Linda at cindyohama@gmail.com.

Kings Room #31

October 11 until 14th
Downtown Vancouver Public Library Atrium

350 W Georgia St
As part of Homelessness Action Week

This is a to-scale reproduction of a 10’ x 12’ SRO (Single Room Occupancy) Hotel room in what was once the Morimoto Building on Powell street, that has been home to Downtown Eastside (DTES) resident Tom Delvecchio for nearly a decade. One of the white walls serves as a projection screen for an interactive 360 degree look into the space. The outside walls feature full-size portraits of community artists: Quin Martins, Andy Mori, Herb Varley, and Karen Ward.

This installation is extracted from Revitalizing Japantown?, a three year study that culminated in an exhibition by the same name at the Nikkei National Museum (March 2016) that revealed a continuous fabric of change across events, time, borders, and cultures in the DTES. It has woven connections between Indigenous, Japanese Canadian, Low-Income, and Marginalized communities who have all fought for their human rights.

Artist GREG MASUDA has been a community-involved photographer, filmmaker, and volunteer since 2003. He is using his creative passions, visual talents, and subtle approach to tell important and entertaining stories that he hopes maay be catalysts for positive social change.

Community-painted scales from the Koinobori installation

October 20th until November 10th
Woodward's Atrium
111 West Hastings Street
As part of Heart of the City Festival

The Koinobori was an interactive installation inspired by traditional carp streamers. It was unveiled during the 40th Annual Powell Street Festival on July 30th and 31st, 2016. Situated in Oppenheimer Park, this large scale interactive project was developed over the course of the weekend with scales decorated and written on by members of our community. The Koinbori was designed by Melody Giang, Emily Huser and Steven Schmidt of BCIT’s Architectural Technology 3 class, along with German exchange students Kai Kattge and Sebastian Saure. It was the winner of the Powell Street Festival Design Competition in partnership with Bing Thom Architects and Abaton Projects.

“The concept of The Koinobori is inspired by the carp streamers and is designed to unite the festival goers with culture, history and personal stories,” states the design team. “In the traditional Japanese culture, the carp streamers symbolize the wishes of strength and courage for the children.”

Japanese Canadian Historic Places in B.C.

Deadline extended to November 30th!

Get Involved Now

The Province is inviting the public to nominate places of historic importance to the Japanese Canadian community which reflect the development and history of British Columbia, and which will be considered for formal recognition of their heritage values. Nominated historic places will be evaluated against specific criteria by a team that includes community and academic expertise to establish heritage significance. Historic places of the highest significance will be considered for official recognition by the Government of British Columbia and placed on the BC Register of Historic Places and the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

The announcement is the first milestone in the Provincial Recognition Program’s Japanese Canadian Historic Places Project. The Provincial Recognition Program follows a highly successful 2015 pilot project which focused on historic places of heritage significance to Chinese Canadians, which resulted in the addition of 21 provincially recognized places in British Columbia to the BC Register of Historic Places.
