It has been a busy month for ASLIA Victoria with the Deaf Expo held at the Melbourne Showgrounds and the National Auslan Conference that included several pre conference workshops on humour, social media, interpreter trainers' roundtable and mentoring that were hosted by ASLIA Victoria. Many thanks to the people who purchased a wristband for NWDP. We raised $150 with all proceeds being passed on to Deaf Victoria.
ASLIA Victoria are looking forward to the restructure proposal relating to our national Association at the upcoming AGM of ASLIA planned to take place before end of the year. Thanks must be extended to the ASLIA Vic committee for their tireless efforts and members who have put up their hand to help with various tasks, it is greatly appreciated.
The ASLIA Victoria committee will be meeting for a planning day on November 5th, considering the feedback gleaned from respondents to our recent survey - and scheduling professional development opportunities for members. Thanks to the 50 members who responded to the survey with such valuable information.
We have finalised plans for the Educational Interpreter Conference thanks to the support of VDEI which will take place on Wednesday 25th January. The guest presenter will be Doug Bowen-Bailey from the USA who will share extensive knowledge with participants. You can attend in person (get in quick) or via live-streaming. Information about registration and the program is outlined in the PD section of this newsletter. We are pleased to have supported WA, SA and also New Zealand to enable them to utilise Doug's expertise for the benefit of their members whilst he is 'down under'. Greater collaboration between states is evident and we envisage this will develop further with the proposed ASLIA national restructure.
Due to the limitations of the ASLIA website, we have uploaded a list of available online PD activities for purchase all in one document on the ASLIA Victoria page for your convenience.
The Mental Health Advisory Subcommittee have provided the foundational information that has led to the writing of a grant submission for funds to establish research and development of a specialisation course for interpreters working in the mental health domain. The submission has been supported by Monash University, Vicdeaf, Auslan Services and Deaf Victoria. We are hopeful that we are successful in obtaining the financial support to enable further training for practitioners to ultimately enhance service provision.
