Welcome to the start of the 2016/17 academic year and an especially warm welcome to both our returning and new students. This September we have 10 students starting the UCL-Energy MRes in Energy Demand Studies and over 80 new students to the MSc in Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment

Hinkley Point to be obsolete within a decade, UCL analysis suggests The planned Hinkley Point C nuclear plant will be outpaced by cheaper, lower-carbon energy sources that will render it largely obsolete within a decade of opening, new University College London analysis indicates.  Read more
UCL-Energy closes UCL-French Embassy collaborative series by examining energy and climate collaboration in Europe 
UCL-Energy hosted an all-day workshop  aimed to examine the intersection of national energy strategies in Northwestern Europe with cooperation across borders, with a particular focus on carbon pricing and sectoral strategies. The workshop was attended by more than 30 participants consisting of UK, French and other European researchers, industry and development partners.

UCL-Energy publishes 2015/16 annual review  
The second published annual review is a showcase of the great work done at UCL-Energy over the past academic year.
In addition to featuring key research and publications from staff and students this review offers a look back at the UCL-Energy seminar series and the institute's involvement in historic events such as COP21. The review also contains UCL-Energy's media appearances and a spotlight on the past academic year's postgraduate studies.

wholeSEM’s UK TIMES model used by DECC to set ambitious new fifth carbon budget with a target to reduce emissions 57% by early 2030  
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), in agreement with the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), have announced an ambitious new carbon budget.
The UK TIMES energy systems model (UKTM), developed by UCL-Energy’s wholeSEM team, has been one of the principal tools used by DECC in setting this budget.

UCL-Energy is delighted to announce the promotion of Dr David Shipworth and Dr Mark Barrett to the role of Professor within the Faculty of the Built Environment. Dr David Shipworth has been promoted to Professor of Energy and the Built Environment and Dr Mark Barrett has been promoted to Professor of Energy and Environmental Systems Modelling  Read more
New UCL-Energy and Carbon War Room study finds that efficient ships save millions but the market fails to reward the owners  
This interdisciplinary conference will explore the methods researchers are using to address the challenge of reducing energy demand. This conference will be held on Thursday 16 June and is primarily aimed at PhD and early career researchers, with the aim of creating an inclusive environment in which a diverse audience can discuss the challenges and opportunities offered by different approaches to energy research. Congratulations to UCL-Energy doctoral researcher Paula Morgenstern on completing her PhD viva In June, PhD student Paula Morgenstern presented her thesis titled ‘Understanding hospital electricity use: an end-use(r) perspective.’ Paula was supervised by Paul Ruyssevelt (Primary) and Rokia Raslan (secondary). Following the viva Paula’s examiners suggested that her work has important implications for energy use in the NHS.  Read more 
 “EU Referendum: Environmental & climate change consequences for the built environment” UCL-Energy & The Edge hold expert panel discussion A panel of 6 research and professional experts convened by the Edge and the UCL Energy Institute presented factual evidence on how EU membership affects the UK's built environment and what the consequences of the Remaining or Leaving the EU would be.  Read more
UCL President & Provost statement: UK vote to leave EU Professor Michael Arthur issued a formal statement following the outcome of the referendum in June. This statement included guidance for UCL staff and student groups as well as a reaffirmation that UCL remains a global university through outlook, people and enduring international partnerships and that UCL values UCL’s staff and students from all countries of the European Union enormously.  Read more  
UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership announced as part of ESRC new  Doctoral Training Network The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has announced a new Doctoral Training Network which significantly widens access for postgraduates to ESRC funding across the UK. The new Network consists of 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) including a UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership, involving five institutions and 25 Doctoral pathways. Read more  
The UCL Energy and Development Group launches as a UCL interdepartmental initiative The group is working together to build both a community of practice and to access research funds.  The team is already working on a research paper and has established a wide view of the relevant capability and capacity across UCL. The groups is also serving as an information hub which has enabled several responses to large consultancy opportunities with valuable research and impact outcomes.  Read more
