“We are not children at risk, we are children of promise.” ─ Emani Davis, 2004 World’s Children’s Honorary Award recipient and daughter of an incarcerated father
“I see myself as powerful and capable because other people see me this way.” — Tanisha, daughter of an incarcerated father
The Osborne Association's New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents (NYCIP) celebrate children of incarcerated parents’ strength, resilience, promise, and their capacity for love. Over decades, our collective organizations and agencies have witnessed children overcome significant obstacles and grow up to be lawyers, teachers, journalists, filmmakers, legislators, healers, advocates, and more.
While separation from a parent is a serious risk factor, children can be stigmatized by the narrative that they are at risk for many negative outcomes, including becoming incarcerated themselves. Children live into the future they see for themselves. Predicting negative future outcomes can be internalized by children and can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Children are better served by a narrative and research that highlights what helps children succeed, including examples of success and overcoming barriers.
Join us to celebrate and support the resiliency and successes of children with incarcerated parents and change the conversation! Please check out the inspiring stories and important research below.
