The San Rafael Libraries will be closed November 11 for Veteran's Day and November 24 & 25 for Thanksgiving.


Virtual Reality Lab for All Ages 

We invite all ages to explore educational games, beautiful natural environments, and engaging stories using the Oculus Rift. Library staff will show you how to use it and help you with the equipment. Just bring yourself and your sense of adventure! Program available courtesy of the CEC Makerspace and the Marin County Free Library, funded by a grant from the California State Library.

The Brothers Le Nain: Painters of the 17th Century

Wednesday, November 2 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm
Council Chambers, San Rafael City Hall, 1400 Fifth Ave. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Seating is limited, admission is free. Docent Speaker:Rita Dunlay – FAMSF
The Le Nain brothers—Antoine, Louis, and Mathieu, all of them unmarried and childless, lived and worked together as they produced some of the most enigmatic and arresting paintings of their time. The exhibition of more than 40 works highlights the Le Nains’ full range of production, including altarpieces, devotional paintings, portraits, landscapes, and tender images of peasants for which the brothers are best known. International art magazine Apollo recently identified it as the “most important and original Old Masters exhibition in the U.S. in 2016.”
First Wednesday Art Talks are sponsored by the Friends of the San Rafael Public Library.
The Knit-Wits: Middle School Knitting Class
Wednesday evenings, November 2 & 9, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Learn how to knit in a fun, supportive environment! Carmen from Dharma Trading Company will teach a series of 5 knitting classes in October and November. Absolute beginners are welcome, as are knitters with a little experience! We will be completing simple, fun projects, and all materials will be provided!

These classes are for middle school youth in grades 6-8. Register at the Children’s Reference Desk, or by calling us at 415-485-3322.

Big Book Sale @ the Library
 
Members’ Preview: Friday, November 4 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm. You may join the Friends or renew at the door.
Public Sale: Saturday, November 5 from 10:00 am - 3:30 pm.
There will be overflowing art & cooking sections, abundant history, spirituality, poetry, natural history, needle arts, great fall reading in hard cover or trade editions, CDs, DVDs,and a plethora of children’s books. Holiday books will be offered and you may even want
to start your Christmas shopping early.
Ready to Write a Novel? NaNoWriMo

Regional Kick-Off Party: Sunday, October 30, 2pm – 4pm in the Library Meeting Room.
We can't start writing yet, but we can meet up and introduce ourselves! Come have a drink and a snack, get some swag, and meet your fellow Marin Writers!
Then, continue to meet Sundays, Nov, 6, 13, 20, and Dec 4, from 2pm - 4pm, to write that novel lurking inside. NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. Participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel in the 4 weeks that we meet. NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. Elizabeth Menozzi, Municipal Liaison for NaNoWriMo in Marin, will facilitate.

Spanish Conversation Club

Ongoing, every Monday, from 1:00 – 2:45 in the Library Meeting Room - November 7, 14, 21, 28
Introducing an ongoing Spanish conversation group that meets every Monday afternoon at 1 pm. The club emphasis is on learning useful “classic Latin” Spanish conversation in a wide variety of everyday social situations. Drop-ins and all levels of Spanish are welcome.

Genealogy with Jeff

Meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Tuesday, November 8 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm in the Library Meeting Room

Our speaker, Jeffery Vaillant, President of the Sonoma County Genealogy Society and genealogy junkie, will share tips, tools, and resources for solving your family genealogy challenges. The basics will be discussed on how to get started in your own research, from starting your family tree to finding information to add bark to the branches!

We provide the Legos, you bring the ideas and imagination. Participants can both build freely and participate in a Lego Quest challenge. For children ages 5 and older. Space is limited.

Color Me Calm - Adult Coloring Group

Thursday, November 10, 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Join us for music and coloring in the Library Meeting Room.

Carl Jung prescribed coloring to his patients to calm their minds, but the health benefits go beyond relaxation. Coloring is a structured activity and so it also activates the logic part of the brain, trains the brain to focus, and helps us exercise our fine motor skills.We’ll provide a variety of coloring sheets, bookmarks, and colored pencils, but feel free to bring your own favorite supplies.

Readers 5 years and older are invited to book an appointment to read to a dog at the San Rafael Public Library! Make your appointment at the Children’s Reference Desk, or call us at 415-485-3322.

Dogs are ideal reading partners, providing comfort and unconditional acceptance that can allow children to focus better and read with greater confidence. The Marin Humane Society’s SHARE a Book program is designed to help children improve their literacy skills, and to offer an opportunity for them to have fun reading to dogs!

Come explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math at the library! We're hosting a series of STEAM Saturdays, with STEAM powered stories, rhymes, songs, crafts, experiments, and sensory experiences for preschool children ages 3-6 and their caregivers. Please wear comfy clothes that are okay to get messy.

Gardening with California Natives - Marin Master Gardeners

Friday, November 18 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm in the Library Meeting Room
Learn why and how using native plants in your landscape is a way to help make up for habitat lost to development. Because native plants have co-evolved with native birds, butterflies, bees, other beneficial insects and mammals, planting them in your gardens helps maintain these populations. By using native plants you can build a beautiful landscape that uses less water and fewer chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Speaker: Bob Mauceli, Master Gardener. CE: 1 CE unit, UC sponsored.


Learn to Create Keynote Presentations 

Meets every 4th Tuesday of the month in the Library Meeting Room.

Part 1 at 2:00:  Ron Matteri from the Golden Gate Computer Society (GGCS) will demonstrate creating a Keynote presentation in the meeting room. 

Part 2 at 3:00: We'll move to the TechZone to practice and create on our iMacs. Bring your iPad and/or a flash drive with your photos.


Code for Marin Meet-Up

Meets every 4th Wednesday of the month in the Library Meeting Room.
Wednesday, November 23 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Code for Marin is a coalition of open data advocates working to integrate our community resources and enhance civic engagement all throughout Marin. We are right now seeking to identify and develop open data opportunities in Marin County. These are events are open discussions and collaborations of community members and coders. Fuse Your Own Textiles / Plastic Bag Upcycling
Wednesday, November 30, from 3:30 - 5 pm
Did you know that the world uses and throws away over a trillion plastic bags each year? Upcycle some of those pesky plastic bags into one of a kind fused textiles! Then use your textile to create a custom wallet, pencil case or protective pouch for your glasses or phone. All materials will be provided, but raid your family’s collection of plastic bags if you like!

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies pairs adult and teen volunteers with elementary school aged youth for 20 minute appointments. During the appointment, the child will practice reading with their Reading Buddy one-on-one, and receive help and guidance with difficult words, comprehension, and other reading skills. We also have bilingual volunteers available who can help in both English and Spanish.

Through December 14, the Downtown Library will offer weekly appointments:

  • Mondays 4-5pm
  • Tuesdays 4-5pm
  • Wednesdays 5-6pm
  • Sundays 1-2pm
  • First and Third Saturdays 10-11am
