President's Message


I look forward to my inauguration as president of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College next Friday, Oct. 14. The 1 p.m. ceremony in the BSU Gymnasium will be followed by a reception with refreshments. I hope you will attend.

I will take the the oath of office at this milestone event, which also will include remarks from Chancellor Steven Rosenstone, Minnesota State Trustee Elise Boudreau, Bemidji Mayor Rita Albrecht and student and faculty representatives from both BSU and NTC. I will deliver an inaugural address, as well.

It will be a great honor to share this occasion with you as my colleagues. Together, we will continue to provide an outstanding education for our students while serving the people of our region, Minnesota and beyond.

Honors Council Lecture Series: Dr. Marty J. Wolf

Fall Honors Council Lecture Series begins Oct. 5
with University Scholar Dr. Marty J. Wolf

Dr. Marty J. Wolf, professor of computer science, will explore the challenges of managing secure information technology while respecting academic freedom to open the Honors Program's fall Honors Council Lecture Series schedule. Wolf is presenting as one of three University Scholars recognized during Commencement exercises in May. Click the photo above to watch a video preview of Dr. Wolf's lecture.

Dr. Elizabeth Hagensen (above), assistant professor of criminal justice, delivered a presentation on punishment, discipline and corrective action at the Minnesota Association of Court Managers conference, held on Sept. 29 at the Sanford Center. Her presentation leads this month's edition of Faculty and Staff News.

President Hensrud's Inauguration set for Oct. 14


Join the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees and the faculty, staff, students and alumni of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College for the inauguration of Dr. Faith C. Hensrud (right) as president of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College.

Dr. Hensrud will be inaugurated in a 1 p.m. ceremony on Oct. 14 in the BSU Gymnasium.

A reception, including a receiving line, will immediately follow the ceremony at approximately 2:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. More information is available at the Office of the President.

Homecoming 2016 has full schedule on Oct. 14-16

Bemidji State's annual Homecoming celebration officially gets underway Oct. 14 with an 11:30 a.m. Beaver Pride luncheon to kick off a full weekend of activities. More than two dozen BSU alums will meet with current students in Alumni Leaders in the Classroom presentations across campus, Beaver Athletics features home events for women's hockey and volleyball in addition to the traditional Homecoming football game, the annual Homecoming parade and the 8th Annual Beaver Block Party and Street Dance takes place Saturday night. On Sunday, the Department of Music hosts the Carl O. Thompson Memorial Concert to celebrate its scholarship recipients.

Registration for Honors Gala open until Friday


Join BSU Alumni & Foundation as it celebrates the success of Imagine Tomorrow, the university's first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, and recognizes its alumni award recipients at the annual Honors Gala. Tickets for the Oct. 14 event, which begins with a 5:30 p.m. social hour at the Sanford Center, are available on the BSU Alumni & Foundation website until Oct. 7.

It's official: enrollment at BSU is up 2.1 percent


For the second consecutive fall, enrollment at Bemidji State University has grown by more than 2 percent. Head count enrollment on the 30th day of classes shows 5,120 students attending Bemidji State this fall, the school’s highest enrollment since 2011 and its fourth highest in the last 17 years.


AIRC explores the importance of Indigenous Peoples Day
at Oct. 10 panel


Dr. Vivian Delgado, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will lead an Oct. 10 panel at the American Indian Resource Center to explore treaty rights and the historical importance of Indigenous Peoples' Day, as well as the growing movement to recognize it in place of the federal Columbus Day holiday. Delgado will be joined by Red Lake historian Jody Beaulieau and Renee Gurneau and Lisa Bellanger, both educators and activists. The free event begins at 6 p.m. and is sponsored by the American Indian Resource Center and the BSU/NTC Office for Diversity and Inclusion.

Photographer Milton Moore shares a visual tale of New England’s fishing industry changed by time in “Working Men, Working Boats,” an exhibit open through Oct. 28 in the Talley Gallery.

BSU makes U.S. News affordability 'Short List'
for out-of-state students

Bemidji State University has been named by U.S. News and World Report as one of the 10 most-affordable colleges or universities in the nation for out-of-state students.

Bemidji State does not charge out-of-state tuition, offering its $8,386 in-state rate for tuition and fees to all students. BSU ranks seventh on the U.S. News Short List.

360 receives $2.55 million National Science Foundation grant


360 Manufacturing Center of Excellence, led by Bemidji State University, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Regional Center award for $2.55 million. This grant will support efforts to increase graduates in advanced manufacturing programs at BSU, Northwest Technical College and other 360 partner colleges through 2019.

Beaver Athletics Update

Beaver Hockey season ticket packages available

This season, Beaver Athletics is offering TruFlex ticket plans, presented by TruStar Federal Credit Union, to allow fans with hectic schedules more flexibility to experience Beaver Hockey without committing to a full season ticket package. TruFlex ticket plans allow fans to use their tickets in ways that work for them. Packages start at $150 for eight tickets.
