Shingles
SHINGLES VACCINE FOR SENIORS 65-70
YEARS OF AGE
As you may know, Ontario is expanding the province’s publicly funded immunization program to help more seniors stay healthy.

Beginning September 15, 2016, Ontario will offer the shingles vaccine free of charge to seniors 65 to 70 years of age.

Shingles can be very serious and cause complications such as loss of vision and debilitating nerve pain and studies show people 65 to 70 years of age are most prone to getting shingles.

The shingles vaccine reduces the likelihood of developing shingles and is most effective for people between 65 and 70 years of age. Making the publicly funded vaccine available to this age range follows the current scientific and expert recommendations including Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization and Ontario’s Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee on Immunization.

Eligible seniors can receive the shingles vaccine from their primary care provider (family physician or nurse practitioners).

Until December 31, 2016, individuals born in 1945 (i.e., those who are already 71 or will be turning 71 in 2016), are also eligible to receive the publicly funded shingles vaccine.
