Photography from Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive

Opening reception: Friday, October 7th from 5 to 7pm

Carmel Modernism, a photography exhibit exploring the early influence of Monterey peninsula master architects, opens Friday October 7th in the gallery.

Organized by Monterey Area Architectural Resources Archive (MAARA), the exhibit examines the early influence of master architects including Richard Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright, who laid the foundation for subsequent generations of architects establishing the local legacy we celebrate today.

Photography, renderings and blueprints reveal the architectural contributions to the built environment that is the signature of Carmel. Architects include William Wuster, Mark Mills, Rowan Maiden, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others.

The exhibit can be seen Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment, through November 9th. As part of Carmel’s Centennial Celebration, the events are  free and the public is invited.

Seashell of the Mind: Architecture of Mark Mills

A lecture by Janey Bennett
Friday, November 4th at 3pm

Historian and author Janey Bennett will give a talk on Carmel architect Mark Mills on Friday, November 4th at 3 p.m. The lecture is by donation.

Designing primarily along California's Central Coast, Mark Mills was an experimental architect of structures suggesting  organic forms relating to the building sites' natural landscape. "Carmel and Big Sur provided Mark with clients who had unique ideas about how they wanted to live," noted his widow Barbara Mills. "Some of these clients allowed him to design structures on seemingly "unbuildable" sites. In addition to the wishes of his clients, he had what he called 'the silent client.' This was the site itself. He respected it. His structures fit gracefully into their natural surroundings. They preserve, not violate, the environment. Often, they seem hidden until one comes close to them." Mr. Mills, who passed away in 2007, was a former Cherry Center board member.
