Sitka Farmers Market earns Best In Class nod

The Sitka Farmers Market recently received Best In Class 2016 honors from the eighth annual American Farmland Trust Farmers Market Celebration. The annual Farmers Market Celebration involves nationwide online voting throughout the summer in five categories. To earn Best In Class honors, the Sitka Farmers Market had to finish in the top 50 nationally and/or in the top three within its state in any of the categories. The Sitka Farmers Market finished second in Alaska in all five categories, and reached the top 50 nationally in the Champion for the Environment category (50th). It also ranked 52nd nationally in the Pillar of the Community category, 55th in the Healthy Food For All and Focussed on Farmers categories, and 57th in the People's Choice category. To learn more, click this link.

Sitka Kitch offers Cooking From Scratch series

Want to learn how to expand your culinary skills while serving healthy meals and stretching your food dollar? The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen is offering a Cooking From Scratch class series this fall. Classes include Homemade Yogurt from Powdered Milk on Monday, Oct. 10; Whole-Grain Breads Using the Tassajara Technique on Monday, Nov. 7; and Winter Morning Creations (Baked or Fried Pancakes from Around the World) on Monday, Dec. 5. All three classes take place from 6-8:30 p.m. and cost $27.50 each plus a food/supply fee shared among all students in the class. Registered dietitian and health educator Lisa Sadleir-Hart is teaching the classes. There is limited space available in each class, but we need at least eight people to register by the Friday night before each class to make sure the class is a go.
