High-level meeting between the EU Commission Director General & IPIFF delegation:  Visit to Protix

On Friday 30 September, the Director General for Health & Food Safety (European Commission) Mr X. Prats Monné visited Protix Biosystems' production facilities – i.e. an IPIFF's member. In the margins of the visit, a high-level meeting was also organized with an IPIFF delegation (i.e. the IPIFF Vice President & Secretariat were present).

Accompanied with two other officials in charge of food & feed safety, Mr. Prats Monné welcomed the efforts undertaken by the EU insect production sector to professionalize and innovate. Compliance with best hygiene practices and feedstocks controls (i.e. only ‘EU authorized substrates’ are used to feed insect products which are marketed into EU) were also highlighted as critical issues.

The DG SANTE delegation informed that discussions have started to allow insect proteins to be authorized for feed in aquaculture, whilst acknowledging the potential for the sector in the future to use new substrates or to allow insect protein for other animal species.

Finally, the DG SANTE delegation showed preparedness to accompany the compilation of applications for authorisations of insects as food and highlighted the importance of trustful communication to gain better resonance among EU consumers & citizens."

IPIFF launches its Task Force on Novel Food

In occasion or the IPIFF's General Assembly held on 19 September, IPIFF President, Antoine Hubert underlined the need for guidance & collaboration for insect producers who are seeking for an authorisation to market their products under the new EU Novel Foods legislation. In order to foster collaboration between operators and competent control authorities, IPIFF decided to create a strategic Task force in order to guide its members in these discussions.

The mandate for the Task Force is to discuss relevant issues, such as access to market, implication of the transitional measures and political guidance for insect producers' collective actions. All of this with a view to improving the position of insect producers and manufacturers in the food chain.

The kick-off meeting of this Task force will take place on Friday 21 October within the IPIFF premises.

State of play of EU discussions on authorising insect proteins as aqua feed & IPIFF position.

In September, the DG SANTE services (European Commission) have launched new discussions with EU Member States with the view to authorising the use of insect proteins as feed for aquaculture animals. For that purpose, the EU Executive has prepared a series of proposals aiming at revising current  provisions from the EU TSE & Animal By-Products legislations.

These discussions are expected to continue by the end of the year as well as early next year. Whilst being in close contact with the European Commission services in charge, IPIFF warmly welcomes this new step forward in the discussions and  has recently adopted a contribution paper in reaction to this initiative.
