LBUSD HS Choice Information Night

The upcoming Parent Academy, set for Tuesday, Oct 11, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm, will be focused on the LBUSD High School Choice process for our current 8th grade families. This will be an informational session and active Q&A focused on delivering the content that we'll learn from our annual high school update meeting that our administrative staff will attend at the end of the week with the district. The information shared will be directly relevant to our 8th grade families, but we welcome all who are interested in learning about LBUSD's high school process. Also, if you are an 8th grade parent/guardian and have yet to access your ParentVue account, please contact Counselor Amos Mikaele directly and he will assist you. We look forward to sharing more with you at our Parent Academy!

October 5th : Walk or Bike to School Day
Student Safety
Families, thank you for being careful at pick up and drop off to not park and wait for your child in the middle of the street. This is making a helpful difference in our traffic. Please note that the LBPD traffic division will be visiting to give tickets to any cars that are parked in the red or stop in the middle of the road. Thank you!

For our students that live in our neighborhood, our IVA Evergreens would like to encourage you to enjoy the nice weather and model our green philosophy by walking or riding their bike to school.

Quick Tip: The bulk of traffic happens within 8 minutes of pick up. Make a plan with your child to be picked up 10-15 minutes after school is out. We are at the gate with students until 3:30pm when we escort any remaining students to the office.

From Our Principal
Intellectual Virtues are for Life Long Learning

Amelia said it best talking to visitors on a tour -

"In math class at IVA students are taught to think for themselves and practice autonomy. I mean, when I grow up I can't just call up Ms. Noble and ask her if I have the right answer. I need to use autonomy."

Thank you, Amelia for explaining how our intellectual virtue practice helps people both learn and live well!

Coming Up
6th-grade Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences - October 17 through 19
The week of October 17th we will have 4 minimum days (including our regular minimum day on Thursday) - Monday through Wednesday will be minimum days to that our teachers can all be available between 1:00 and 3:00pm to conference with each student. With 78 students that means we will have quick 20-minute conferences with two teachers at IVA. It is very important that the student attends since they will be leading the discussion of what virtues they see themselves practicing and growing in, what is difficult for them, and how they are doing in all of their classes.

Sign ups* for student-parent-teacher conferences will be available starting Wednesday of next week
More information in next week's newsletter.

To learn and live well,
Jacquie Bryant

* Because our ART 6 students will be on a field trip, we're asking 6th grade Coding students to come Monday, and ART 6 students to come Tuesday/Wednesday. Once sign ups are posted, we'll give priority according to electives.

6th graders in art this semester are going to LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Monday, October 17
This is a full day field trip, even though IVA is on a minimum day schedule.
  • Parents need to know not to schedule a conference on that day if their student is currently in art.
  • Next semester art 6 and art 7 will go on this field trip.
  • The trip returns at 3:00pm for regular release time.
  • Your LACMA field trip permission slip is due October 11. Fill out by logging in to Illuminate. Please note that the form has been assigned to one parent only. If one parent's portal log in does not display the LACMA form, please try the other parent's log in. Go to illuminate, parent portal, Forms in menu bar

Screenagers
Thu Nov 17th
Have you heard of SCREENAGERS: Growing up in the Digital Age—the documentary film that explores the impact of screen time on kids AND offers solutions on how we can help kids find balance? Across the country, parents are bringing their middle school and older kids to see the film and are tickled to find them actively participating in the post screening discussions!

Join us for a screening of the film here at IVA on Thursday, November 17th at 6:30pm. Advance tickets are $15 for parents and $10 for teens. Tickets will be $20 at the door if not sold out. But most screenings are packed. Purchase tickets here

Please invite any interested friends.  If you would like to help out (we need ushers, donated bottled water/packaged snacks for the student led concession stand) or have questions, contact Mary Van Geffen (213-703-7729).
