OATHBREAKER "Rheia"

OATHBREAKER "Rheia"
2xLP - $15.30 / CD - $7.00 / CASSETTE - $6.00
DEATHWISH / DW196

“Rheia” is the groundbreaking album from Belgium’s Oathbreaker. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta), “Rheia” is a true game changer for the genre. Blurring lines and dissolving the boundaries of heavy music as we know it today.

Opener “10:56” begins with a haunting guitar riff and Caro Tanghe’s beautifully sung vocal before abruptly soaring to new heights with “Second Son of R”. Its blasts of melody mutate into a blackened buzz while waves of tempo changes pound down with intense emotional weight. “Being Able To Feel Nothing” then rolls in like a storm. Chaotically breaking apart to reveal the eye before churning once again. “Stay Here / Accroche-Moi” is an otherworldly reverb drenched acoustic number that leads to “Needles In Your Skin”. A deeply personal song that showcases the artistic strength vulnerability brings. It’s hard to believe that this is just the half way point of this post everything masterwork. “Immortals” then unfurls as a goose bump inducing monster. This leads to the ambitious “I’m Sorry, This Is”, “Where I Live”, and “Where I Leave”; A musical triptych that needs to be heard to be believed. All of it comes to an end with mesmerizing closer “Begeerte”. Ethereally materializing before vanishing into the beautiful unknown.

**AVAILABLE ON DW EXCLUSIVE TRANSPARENT RED VINYL**

Los Angeles artful indie post hardcore band Touché Amoré have announced a new album, Stage Four, to be released September 16 on Epitaph.

Formed in Burbank, California, across 2007 and 2008, the band’s urgent sound, with its melodic sonic assault and impassioned vocals, has grown tighter and more refined through a trio of full-length albums and a series of EP’s and releases. Since those early days, lead singer Jeremy Bolm, guitarists Nick Steinhardt and Clayton Stevens, bassist Tyler Kirby, and drummer Elliot Babin have created a trajectory for themselves through hard work and dedication. And now with Stage Four, their fourth and biggest album to date, they are cementing their status as one of rock music’s most talented, relatable, and visceral acts. Over the years the band rose to prominence with 2009’s …To the Beat of a Dead Horse and 2011’s Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me. Touché Amoré crossed into new territory with the 2013 art-punk masterpiece Is Survived By. Having earned early cred, critical favor, and legions of fans by playing lengthy tours of all shapes and sizes—in every basement, youth center, and house show—the band enjoyed a bigger following which only grew along with their talents.

“I don’t open up to people too much in regular life, but when I’m writing songs, I want to be as open and as honest as possible,” Bolm confesses. Touché albums have always served as an emotional outlet for Bolm. So when the time came to write Stage Four there was no question that it would be about passing of Bolm’s mother in late 2014. Stage Four was recorded in early 2016 in Studio City, CA with producer Brad Wood. Cathartic in delivery, highly sentimental, and sonically triumphant, Stage Four is an emblem of a band both living its dream and marred by loss. And with Stage Four, Touché Amoré has unmistakably made the biggest, boldest, and most artistic statement of their career.

TURNSTILE "Move Thru Me"
7"EP - $5.00
POP WIG / WIG003v

**AVAILABLE ON DW EXCLUSIVE EASTER YELLOW VINYL**

The future is built by the youth.

Defined by perpetual motion and dedicated to personal freedom, Turnstile requested in 2011 that we play by “New Rules”; in 2013 that we Step To Rhythm and “Keep It Moving”; and in 2015, to strive for Non-Stop Feeling. Always more appeal than demand, more liberation than limitation, Turnstile extend their hand in 2016 with Move Thru Me. Three new songs: “Come Back For More”, “Harder On You” and a title track, rounded out with a cover of “Fuck Me Blind” by Washington, D.C.’s Give, incite complete physical and emotional carte blanche. As the band says, “The cover fit so perfectly with the idea of the record as, to me, it is about the freedom to be who you are, love who love, and not living within limits created by society or by yourself. It’s an important song in hardcore for our generation so we wanted to cover it.”

Born in Montgomery and Prince George’s, the two most important counties in the world bordering the most important city in the world, with aide from Columbus, Ohio, Turnstile’s brand of youth-minded, youth-driven hardcore punk intend on breaking down barriers, sonically and ideologically. Constantly growing, constantly changing, super motion.

Move Thru Me, a taste of the future out now on Pop Wig Records.

HARM WÜLF "Hijrah"

HARM WÜLF "Hijrah"
12"LP - $9.60 / CD - $7.00
DEATHWISH / DW192

Harm Wülf is G. Hirsch, known for his lyrical and vocal work in Blacklisted. Harm Wülf is inspired by a range of artists: from the tranquil resonance of Low, to the rhythmic acoustic strumming of Strength Through Joy, and the ascending power of Angels Of Light. Even calling to the insular/grotesque Americana of Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O’Connor, etc. Most times sparse and austere and at others apocalyptically orchestrated, Harm Wülf has the sound of something long since missing.

“Hijrah” is the emotional sophomore album from Harm Wülf. Where the debut album (Deathwish, 2013) was primarily built on the singer/songwriter experience, “Hijrah” introduces a wash of stark instrumentation with Jon Nean of Blacklisted on Bass and engineer/musician Arthur Rizk (Inquisition, Prurient) on Percussion backing G. Hirsch as he performs all vocal, guitar, and harmonica duties. Altogether they have created a dark and emotional atmosphere that is more fully realized than ever before.

Sect [sekt] Noun: “A dissenting or schismatic group of people with somewhat different beliefs - typically regarded as heretical - from those of a larger group to which they belong.”

With two countries and four hometowns between them, Sect was born when two project ideas between tour mates merged into the same experiment, finally taking shape in 2015 and culminating in recording sessions in Raleigh NC in early 2016. Sect is comprised of five veterans of ‘90s hardcore who cut their teeth in that formative moment of political, cynical, antagonistic extremes. They each went on to put in their time in bands spanning all corners of the hardcore and xvx worlds, though they’d rather skip the ex-members talk entirely and get right down to the blast beats and breakdowns that fight it out in their chaotic jams - aka cut the shit and go for the throat. Because the Orwellian police states and irreparable social and ecological disasters we once saw off on the horizon are now on our front doorsteps, in full swing - and in just such a volatile, precarious moment as this for civilization, there is more reason than ever to keep lashing out at a world more suicidally bent on its own destruction and the exploitation of people, species and the ecosystem itself, than perhaps ever before in history. For Sect, this is the purpose of hardcore as they know it, conveying an urgency that transcends age, credentials or scene politics, to convert desperation into real talk and action.

CURSED "III: Architects Of Troubled Sleep"

CURSED "III: Architects Of Troubled Sleep"
12"LP - $10.70
DEATHWISH / DW191v

The highly anticipated vinyl repress of "Three: Architects of Troubled Sleep", the final album from Cursed.

This definitive version of "Three" was manufactured using brand new pressing plates, making the release sound better than ever. Presented in a gatefold jacket with revamped artwork from illustrator John Baizley (Baroness, etc).

This is the third in a series of singular represses of the entire Cursed full length catalog from Deathwish ("One" and "Two" are now available). Cursed "Two" and "Three" albums were originally released by the defunct Goodfellow label, and are under exclusive license to Deathwish from Sonic Unyon Distribution.

A final limited box set of all three albums and a book of Cursed related material by Chris Colohan will be released later down the road via a partnership of Deathwish and Colohan's own label, High Anxiety.

Cursed were Canada's metallic monstrosity fronted by vocalist/lyricist Chris Colohan formerly of The Swarm, Left For Dead, and Ruination. The band also featured former Ire and Black Hand members. Distinctly their own animal, Cursed took the most powerful qualities of the aggressive sub-genres and turned them into something raw and explosive. Ultimately influencing and shaping the heavy music world as we know it today.

In 2008, Cursed unleashed what many consider to be their hardest hitting album, "Three: Architects of Troubled Sleep". After playing a number of intimate shows and a single record release show in Canada, they embarked on an ill-fated European Tour. On the last morning of the tour, they were robbed of all of their money, passports, etc. The robbery from within their own community was what Colohan has described as the "bullet in the head" of the band. Cursed played one final show in Amsterdam that day, and went their separate ways. For some of the members, it was the last time they ever saw each other.

CULTURE ABUSE "Peach"

CULTURE ABUSE "Peach"
12"LP - $12.70 / CASSETTE TAPE - $6.50 / CD - $6.50
6131 / 6131095

Culture Abuse dare you to try categorizing them. On their debut full length, "Peach," the San Francisco Bay Area band drop hints with every song — power pop melodies collide with punk grit, garage rock swagger meets hardcore aggression, and there's even an upstroke or two — but never give the listener enough to definitively put them in a box. And that’s just the way they like it.

Recorded with Scott Goodrich at Nu-Tone Studios, "Peach" is an eclectic album that represents a band finding their sound, and that sound is anything they want it to be. The album sees the band lean full tilt into the Nuggets-inspired garage punk only hinted at on their more hostile early work, throwing keyboards and even the occasional string arrangement on top of their distorted attack. The result creates a barrage of outsider earworms that might be hard to label, but aren’t hard to sing along to instantly. This refreshingly try-anything approach to songwriting makes for an unpredictable listen that is somehow simultaneously cohesive, a testament to Culture Abuse’s ability to wrestle disparate styles into something all their own.

Culture Abuse don’t care what kind of band you think they are, and after listening to "Peach," you’ll be too busy singing along to care either.

EARTH GIRLS "WANDERLUST"

EARTH GIRLS "Wanderlust"
12"LP - $11.90
GRAVE MISTAKE / GRAVE077v

"Earth Girls play power pop with an emphasis on 'power.' Spearheaded by guitarist/vocalist, Liz Panella, the Chicago-based band write songs that are bursting with breezy earworms but still pack an undeniably urgent punch. This precarious and exciting balance between infectiousness and grit propels the band’s debut full length, Wanderlust.

Throughout Wanderlust, Panella effortlessly combines elements of 60s and 70s pop with more modern influences, while adding her own distinguishing touches to make songs that are as catchy as they are concise. Earth Girls’ songs are driven by hook-filled immediacy, but they aren’t without sonic and lyrical depth. The best hooks always sound effortless and Wanderlust is loaded with these deceptively catchy yet winding melodies and chord changes. Every instrument plays it’s role perfectly and tastefully; warm vocal harmonies weave around gritty guitar and inventive bass lines, all held together by airtight drumming. The album's tight 21 minute runtime lends itself to repeat listens that reveal Panella’s attention to detail in arrangements, as well as pointed lyrics reflecting a struggle to make the most of life and its relationships."

**BACK IN STOCK**

Sometimes, things just seem to happen for a reason. The pieces fall into place in unexpected ways, and life takes a turn no one could have predicted. This rings strikingly true for the solo career of Memphis, Tennessee's Julien Baker.

For years, Baker and a group of close friends have performed as the band Forrister (formerly The Star Killers), but when college took her four hours away, her need to continue creating found an outlet through solo work. The intent was never to make these songs her main focus, yet the process proved to be startlingly cathartic. As each song came into shape, it became more apparent that Baker had genuinely deep, surprisingly dark stories to tell from her thus far short life (she turns 20 this Fall). Tales of her experiences are staggering, and when set to her haunting guitar playing, the results are gut wrenching and heartfelt, relatable yet very personal. There’s something wonderfully hypnotizing about Baker gently confessing her soul with such tremendous honesty.

At the prompting of a friend, Baker ventured to Richmond, Virginia to record a number of her new songs at Spacebomb Studios. The tracks from this session were circulated among Baker's friends, meeting high praise and lots of encouragement for the songs to see a proper release. Soon, she found a home on 6131 Records’ increasingly diverse roster, and plans were made to release her debut full length, Sprained Ankle.

To call Sprained Ankle a happy accident would be misleading as to the nature of these poignant, emotive songs. Yet no one, least of all Baker, could have predicted she'd be releasing an album, especially as a solo artist. Thankfully, now the world will be able to share in her passion and sorrow.

Siege was an American hardcore punk band from Weymouth, Massachusetts. They were active in the 1980s Boston hardcore scene from 1983 to 1985, and reunited briefly in the early 1990s. Siege’s unprecedented level of extreme hardcore punk was some of the fastest and heaviest of its time, incorporating lightning fast tempos, chord changes, vocal delivery, and blast beats into its style, thus setting the stage for the emerging grindcore scene. And though rather short-lived and little-known during their existence, subsequent musicians have cited the group as a profound influence, including the famous British grindcore band Napalm Death and the American hardcore band Dropdead, whose name was derived from the title of Siege’s demo of the same name.

FURY "Paramount"
12"LP - $12.50 / CASSETTE TAPE - $5.00
TRIPLE B / TRIPLEB067

At the apex of Fury’s short and startling rise, from a providential birth in late 2013 through era-defining performances at America’s Hardcore fest in 2014 and 2015, the Orange County five-piece has delivered Paramount, a debut full-length album of grace, erudition, and effortless virtuosity that guarantees Fury’s induction into the tiny fraternity of epochal hardcore bands — e.g., Embrace, Unbroken, Mental — in whose sonic singularity and aesthetic intelligence the best minds of successive generations have seen themselves reflected. Paramount is impossible to characterize in the usual terms of A-meets-B direct influence: maybe you hear Burn, maybe you hear Outburst or Beyond or Supertouch, but no combination of such references conveys the subtlety of the songwriting, the precision of the musicianship, or the ferocity of Jeremy Stith’s vocal performance, by way of which one encounters the best written and most cleverly phrased hardcore lyrics in recent memory. Paramount is, as they say in the groves of academe, sui generis. And yet to apprehend the lyric sheet’s overt intertextuality (no less than Shakespeare, Don Delillo and Praise’s Andy Norton, among others, are given co-writing credit), to hear the multiplicity of guest vocalists, to spend the 12 minutes required to read the voluminous thanks list — all this is to know, as the band itself surely does, that Paramount belongs no more to the individuals who recorded it than to the entire roiling, loving, terrifying, inspiring, hateful, romantic, literate, ignorant, fantastically dynamic culture that gave rise to it.
