AUTUMN DAYS ARE HERE!

The leaves are falling and the temperature is dropping, which can only mean one thing... It's time to get your home weatherized and ready for winter! Don't wait to start preparing your home for cold temperatures- check your furnace to make sure it's operating, and change the filter. If you have a drafty home, apply for Weatherization Assistance today. And be sure to apply for HEAP Benefits next month when the application process opens for the 2016-17 heating season. If you need assistance finding resources available to make needed repairs, contact our office today at (716) 882-7661.

This Fall is also a great time to stay active in our City. The City of Buffalo will be drafting the Capital Budget in November and holding public hearings for residents to voice their concerns or support for spending. The City will also be holding two public hearings to hear from residents on the latest draft of the Buffalo Green Code. For our affordable housing supporters, this is a great opportunity to let our local leaders know that you support Inclusionary Zoning.

This will be our last newsletter of 2016. Our Winter Newsletter will reach your inbox in January 2017. Until then, stay up to date on what's happening in our office by following us Facebook and Twitter

Stay warm, and enjoy watching the leaves change!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Simeon, Executive Director

THANK YOU UNITED WAY AND ROSWELL!

Back in August, HOCN participated in the United Way Day of Caring to clean and green the Hudson Street Pedestrian Bridge. In just three hours, this hard working group of 17 volunteers collected 50 bags of trash and lawn debris, and planted a beautiful garden.
Our thanks to all of our volunteer event participants from Roswell Park, and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County's United Way Day of Caring staff. A special thanks to M&T Bank and University Heights Tool Library for providing support for these events.
See photos from this great event on our Facebook Page here.

WELCOME GRACE!

This Fall, HOCN welcomed a new member to our team- Grace Lauria! Grace will be joining us as our Community Enrichment Coordinator, providing bilingual services for our programming and keeping HOCN connected with our community.

NATIONAL LEAD POISONING PREVENTION WEEK

October 23rd-29th, 2016 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Decades after ending lead in paint, gasoline, solder and other sources, lead poisoning remains one of the nation’s most devastating environmental health threats. Lead dust in the home is caused by chipping, peeling, flaking or deteriorating lead-based paint and can exist in even the cleanest of homes. When lead dust is ingested or inhaled, even in minuscule amounts, it can cause significant and irreversible brain damage as well as other health problems.
You can learn more about home lead hazards here.

INCLUSIONARY ZONING FOR BUFFALO

You know we value affordable housing, which is why we support adopting an Inclusionary Zoning Policy in the City of Buffalo. We've worked with the Buffalo Inclusionary Housing Coalition to develop a proposal for our City leaders to review. Under the proposal, whenever a developer created new housing with 10 or more units, 30 percent or more of the units would be affordable.  The Coalition includes HOCN, Housing Opportunities Made Equal, LISC Buffalo, Open Buffalo, Partnership for the Public Good, and PUSH Buffalo. Research for the report was contributed by Cornell University High Road Fellows Victorian Neenan and Skye Hart.

HEART OF THE CITY FLASHBACK FACT

Did you know that in 2013, through New York State Homes and Community Renewal funding and proceeds from the Whitney Place Properties Initiative, HOCN acquired and rehabilitated 330 Prospect Avenue, a double family home. It was sold to a first-time homebuyer following construction.
You can see before and after photos on our website here.
