So, What's this Kundalini Yoga all about?

Kunda-what? Lini-who?
Kundalini Yoga - the most ancient form of yoga - has a mystical reputation that precedes itself.
Without questions, Kundalini Yoga is a true experience, I hope that by reading this you have a more practical understanding of this special practice and are inclined to give it a shot. So let’s break it down.

If you haven’t tried Kundalini Yoga, it is likely that you’ve started hearing about its more unique elements: the all-white uniform, the turbans, the deep breathing, the chanting. You may have had a friend speak to you about it and they’ve said something cryptic, mystical and indecipherable like this, “Oh man, wow. I just. Words don’t even explain. I feel amazing totally awakened. I am just so connected. You have to try it. It’s a trip. It will totally change your life. It’s weird though. It’s good, but it’s definitely weird.” And you have probably found yourself feeling part curious and part dubious and maybe even a little scared. Great. That’s a great place to be. But, let's go deeper.

The first point I’d like to make is that while here in the West we are most familiar with the most popular style of yoga “Hatha” or “Vinyasa” yoga, there are many, many different kinds of yoga. In fact, there are 6 main schools of yoga including Bhakti Yoga - the yoga of selfless love, Karma Yoga - the yoga of good action, Raja Yoga (the house of Kundalini and Ashtanga) - the Royal path transforming mental and physical energy into spiritual energy, Jnana Yoga - the yoga of wisdom, Hatha Yoga - the physical path of moon and sun union, Kriya Yoga - the path of self awareness, and Tantra Yoga - the yoga of sacred connection. Within each one of these paths exist certain styles like Anusara, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Kirtan, Iyengar, Naad,  etc.

Now, the concept of raising one’s “Kundalini” energy is at the root of every style and type of yoga. All of em. Kundalini energy is often referred to as the coil - or cobra - at the base of one’s spine that represents the latent universal life force -  the source of connecting to the “God” or “larger creative energy” within all of us. In fact, Yoga itself means “Union” - so all yogas are aiming to create this union with the divine self, the great one spirit, or universal “god” energy. The goal of all yoga is to “awaken” this energy and raise it through your spine, activating each chakra, until it ultimately reaches your crown and connects you to your highest creative manifestation - your “Dharmic” path. Why is this important? Because you rise above the day-to-day stress and become connected to your larger purpose and the purpose of mankind.

Each and every yoga system works in achieving this with dedication and none is better or worse than the other. However, they work differently and at different speeds, with a focus on different techniques. Hatha yoga, for example, focuses on flexibility and Ujjayi breath. Kirtan, alternatively, focuses on chanting & singing.  Now, Kundalini Yoga incorporates the various yogic technologies including pranayama breath, physical postures, singing, chanting, and deep meditation in order to bring about fast individual transformation. We often times involve gongs :)

Known as the King’s Yoga, Kundalini Yoga was hidden from the common people for thousands of years, only shared with royalty due to its potent power. It remained a secret technology until Yogi Bajhan came to America in the late 60’s to  share the technology. Yogi Bajhan brought this yoga West because we are moving into a new age of Humanity. You may have heard this referred to the “Information Age." While in this age, we have more access than ever before to knowledge a information, and our consciousness is evolving at an ever-rapid pace. But, our “hardware," including our nervous systems, are being taxed and fried. Understandable as we receive more information in a single day than someone a few centuries ago might in an entire lifetime. Yikes. Kundalini not only invites the evolution of consciousness & awareness, it upgrades the nervous system with the ability to handle the stresses and overload of information we are experiencing in everyday life.

It's different, but it works.
