Who Is The Prodigal?
The Prodigal Son (aka The Lost Son) is the story in Luke 15 told by Jesus as a parable. It’s the story of a young man who decided he wanted his inheritance from his father ahead of time and when he got it, he moved from the farm to the city where he blew his money on wild living and parties. Then when it ran out, he found himself having to get a job that didn’t even pay enough to eat on.
He was literally starving.
How does the story of the Prodigal Son relate to Christians today?
You Have An Inheritance!
Did you know that you have an inheritance?
Did you know you can waste your inheritance?
Matthew 25:34 says that your inheritance is the Kingdom of God.
Ephesians 1 says that we are seated in the heavenly realms and have received many blessings. These, too, are your inheritance.
As a Christian you have received your inheritance and you continue to receive it as you continue walking with the Lord. If you choose to waste it by walking away from your Christian life, you are a prodigal. Eventually everything will be lost.
Do You Realize You Are Starving?
If you know Jesus as your Savior and are not walking with Him, you are not receiving what God intends for you; you are not receiving the blessings. You are not growing in the spirit. Your heart is becoming hardened from ignoring the cry of the Holy Spirit to come back. You are starving for God’s nurturing presence.
The Truth: Prodigal Son
Come To Your Senses!
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!” | Luke 15:17.
What Brought Him To His Senses?
- Hunger and Longing
- Need and Desperation
Are you hungry for God’s presence? Are you desperate for a change in your life?
“Backslidden” Christian, what will it take for you to come to your senses? What will it take for you to hit rock bottom?
The Return Of The Prodigal
The parable tells us that the lost son decides to return to his father—as a humble servant. He will beg forgiveness and ask his father to let him work for food. He doesn’t expect more than that because he blew his “son-ship” along with his inheritance.
However, when he returns, the father runs out to meet him and receives him with love and forgiveness. According to Luke 15:22, he restores him to his position in the family as a son—the robe, the ring, and the sandals represent this.
Return To The Father
As a Christian, you are a member of God’s family. As a prodigal you have made choices in your life that are contrary to God’s plan for you. But the moment you make that 180° turn back to the Father—the moment you make that first step—He will run out to meet you with love and forgiveness.
The Father wants to restore you to your position in the Family as a son or daughter in Christ, with the authority, blessings, inheritance, and nurturing as a family member in our Heavenly Kingdom. If you are ready to take that first step, pray the following prayer and then tell a sister or brother in Christ.
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that there is no sin too great for you to forgive! Thank you for wanting me back! I want to turn from MY ways and do life YOUR way from now on. Let me feel Your love as You forgive me and restore me to the center of Your will. Give me the strength and guidance to follow you as your child and disciple from this day forward.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
