October 21, 3:10pm: this week's Honors Salon speaker is Dr. Kevin Schalinske, Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition, and chair of the Human Sciences Honors committee. Dr. Schalinske will present on the "History of Nutrition and its Translation to the Present":

We all need to consume food and acquire the proper nutrients – but what was thought about food and nutrients hundreds of years ago?  How do we use the knowledge we now have about nutrients to find uses for them well beyond their primary function?  We will look at the history of some select nutrients and what the future holds for new and innovative uses.

Join us Friday; bring your own kale in order to shame those of us eating popcorn.

Volunteer with DMACC's new FIRST Lego League

Do you want to inspire kids in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math? Are you interested in helping to celebrate and support 160+ kids during an amazing learning experience? For the first time, DMACC has the exciting opportunity of hosting a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) regional qualifier competition and we would like to invite you and your friends to join our volunteer team on Sunday, November 13th on the DMACC Ankeny campus. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, lunch, and a great leadership and volunteer experience to include on your resume and in job interviews! We are specifically looking for a DJ, Co-Emcee, and referees! There are also many other volunteer opportunities available!

FIRST Lego League is a world-wide organization that is focused on innovation, imagination and teamwork for elementary and middle school-aged children (Grades 4-8). Guided by adult coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field. It creates a fun environment while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. Along their discovery journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and even presentation skills.

You can help! Volunteers (ages 16+) are what makes the FLL events succeed. For such a large event, there are many volunteer roles such as judges, referees, hall patrol, check in, lunch help, award distribution, etc. Whether you have volunteered at a past FIRST Lego League event or this is your first time hearing about the organization, there is a volunteer opportunity for you!

Sign up now! If you are interested in possibly volunteering during the day of the event, please register through the link below and we will be contacting you with further details. FIRST has a system for volunteer registration that will allow you to see all events in Iowa. Login or create an account in the Volunteer Information Matching System (VIMS) and look for “Ankeny Regional Qualifier” under “Apply to an Event” to volunteer at the November 13th Regional Event. Register as a volunteer HERE!

For more information about the FIRST Lego League Regional Qualifier event or questions about volunteer opportunities, please contact Brandy Cunningham, bbcunningham@dmacc.edu or 515-289-9563. Thank you for supporting Iowa’s youth!
