PROFESSOR THANDWA MTHEMBU’S INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE TO DUT
Even though I have been here for only three days, I am fully aware that you expect me to address you.
Ideally, one has to say the minimum when he/she she is still learning about a new workplace and environment. However, in introducing myself, as this message could only be about that, I could share with you some of the things that will make us cohere and be progressive and successful as a community.
Choosing the 2016 DUT Fashion Show’s Best Range on Show winner proved to be a difficult task for the array of judges who had to look at whose range best fitted the post-apocalyptic scenario with a multi-cultural ethos, simplistic, sustainable and beyond the gender bias.
Despite the challenge, Nivadni Sewnath scooped the Best Range on Show award, beating 20 candidates who had made it to the finale, with her Abakwetha collection
MAJUBANA’S ANIMÉ-SAMURAI INSPIRATION EARNS HIM AN AWARD
On Friday night (30 September), the Durban University’s Fashion and Textiles Department held its annual Fashion Show 2016 where five overall winners, as well as other winners who had won merit awards for showing excellence in their ranges, were crowned.
Themed: After Earth, this year’s Show challenged 35 Fashion and Textiles students to explore their own vision of our next world through their respective fashion ranges.
SUSTAINABILITY EARNS LEANDI MOST COMMERCIAL RANGE ON SHOW
On Friday night (30 September) last week, the Durban University’s Fashion and Textiles Department held its annual Fashion Show 2016 where five overall winners as well as other winners who had won merit awards for showing excellence in their ranges were crowned.
Most Commercial Range on Show winner Leandi Mulder impressed judges in this category through her Restore range which explored “the use of Kintsugi art in repairing our dressed bodies after earth”.
MACCRAMÉ TECHNIQUE EARNS THORNTON MOST TECHNICAL RANGE AWARD
For third-year Fashion and Textiles student Jessie-Gray Thornton, it took lots of wrong knotting techniques, many hours of dedication and sheer hard work to conceptualise and design her mind-blowing technical range. She walked away with the coveted Best Technical Range award during the annual DUT Fashion Show 2016 finale held at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, DUT Steve Biko Campus.
