President's Message

President's Message

I've been thinking a lot lately about some of the things that make BRRC such an outstanding running club. We offer a yearly calendar of competitive and fun races, post race results within hours of each event, offer free photos and great training programs. We have a camaraderie among us. We are enthusiastic and encouraging. We're runners, man - we're good people to be around.

Behind all of this, though, is the single most important thing that sets our club apart from the rest - and that's our commitment to our own club. None of the things I mentioned are possible without our members giving back from within. BRRC is an all volunteer organization. We depend on our members' time and commitment to see things through. Whether it's posting race results, directing a race or even keeping track of club records - all of us play a vital role within our community. While you will see some of our volunteers on a weekly basis at Goucher or Loch Raven, we have numerous volunteers behind the scenes making things tick, including our Officers and Board Directors.

As we get closer to the General Membership Meeting in December, it's important to think about next year's Board. I'd like to encourage you to consider serving our club. You must have been an active member for at least six months to serve, and BRRC's By-Laws call for 4 Officers - including the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary - and 7 directors chosen from our membership.

The Board of Directors "shall manage the affairs of the Club between Club meetings, shall determine the agenda for Club meetings, shall plan Club functions, and shall do all things necessary to maintain the Club as an ongoing organization." The Board "oversees critical club functions like membership, race planning, scholarship management and training programs. It also considers initiatives like new races to add to the schedule and coaching certification and community outreach. A diverse set of ideas and opinions informs a strong Board. Other than enthusiasm and a desire to influence the Club, no special characteristics are required to serve on the Board."

If you have any questions, or if you might be interested in a board position, please do not hesitate to email me. I have appointed former VP, Jim Archibald, as chair of the Board Nomination Committee again this year. The goal is to have a written report of potential board members sent to you prior to our General Membership Meeting on December 5th. Keep an eye on our website for more information leading up to the event.

It has been an enjoyable, fun and fulfilling experience serving on the board for the past three years. The insight into the running community and the satisfaction of having made an immediate impact is immeasurable. I invite you to give it a shot.

Before I wrap this up, I would like to personally congratulate long-time member, Ronnie Wong, on completing his 50th state! Mr. Wong, at the age of 70, has completed marathons in all 50 states - the last one being the Fox Cities Marathon in Wisconsin (1st in his age group in a time of 3:55, no less). Next time you see Ronnie, make sure you congratulate him. I'm sure he'll tell you all about his journey too.
