Lewisham Music Hub Newsletter
October 2016

Welcome to our latest newsletter.

Lewisham Music Hub is the borough’s music education network, run by Lewisham Music Service. Its 30 partner organisations are working with thousands of children and young people every week. Please visit www.lewisham.gov.uk/musichub for details of our after school and Saturday programmes, for information about concerts and projects, and to find out more about our partners.
TRANSFER OF LEWISHAM MUSIC SERVICE & HUB TO CHARITABLE STATUS

On 7 September 2016 the Lewisham Mayor and Cabinet approved the next stage of the Music Service’s transfer out from the Council to a newly formed charitable organisation, Lewisham Music.

The Mayor and Cabinet’s decisions and accompanying papers can be seen here: http://councilmeetings.lewisham.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=139&MId=4304 (item 477)

We are grateful to all of you who contributed to the consultation. This next step has allowed us to set up a small board of shadow Trustees, to apply to Charity Commission, and to continue with the process which will ensure the transfer is carried out in accordance with Council and legal guidance.

The transfer is being led by the Music Service. It is not being enforced by Lewisham Council. It will be carried out in such a way as to minimise any negative impact on our delivery. The transfer is not being explored for any other reason than to bring benefits to users and stakeholders through increased opportunities for fund-raising and greater control in making bespoke improvements in future operation and delivery.

Please contact the Music Service on 020 8314 6454 or by email at music.hub@lewisham.gov.uk for more information.

Thank you.

LPO SOUNDWORKS

Calling all creative young musicians

If you teach any creative young musicians aged 14-19, we want to hear from them! Please pass this information to any students who may wish to take part.

LPO Soundworks is a platform for creative and talented artists aged 14-19, uniting teenage musicians with young experts from other art-forms.

We’re looking for young instrumental players and composers to take part in this year’s LPO Soundworks programme. They should be excited by devising new music and art, exploring and experimenting, and learning from some of the best in the business.

As part of the LPO Soundworks music ensemble, they’ll be inspired by London Philharmonic Orchestra musicians and composers, push their creative ideas to the limit alongside other young players, and collaborate with brilliant dancers, actors and filmmakers.

LPO Soundworks Spotlight Days and the Creative Week all take place in central London during school holidays.

Our first Spotlight Day will take place on Monday 24 October 2016 – we’ll be delving into the world of composing for choreography, working with some of the superb young dancers from Quicksilver, Rambert’s youth dance company.

BBC Proms
BBC PROMS YOUTH CHOIR ACADEMY

The BBC Proms team is launching a new strand of vocal learning work for the BBC Proms 2017 and is inviting applications from young people aged 16-21 based in London and the South East.

The newly launched BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy aims to find undiscovered voices from all musical backgrounds and develop them in a choral setting. The Academy offers young singers the chance to develop their voice, explore classical choral singing and technique and work alongside professional classical singers.

Applications are being encouraged from young people who may have little or no musical experience, but who have raw talent and lots of enthusiasm. Applicants do not need to be able to read music, but they should have a good musical ear. They must also have a love of singing and a voice with potential, even if untrained and undeveloped. They must be committed to the project and be able to attend all Academy sessions. It is entirely free to participate in this project and financial support will be provided wherever necessary.

Workshops will run from January - July 2017 twice a month. The project will culminate in a performance on the First Night of the BBC Proms 2017.

Please note that an informal workshop selection day will take place on Saturday 3 December.
