P.B. Wood Golf Tournament

Wood Golf Tournament was played at Smithfields Country Club in Easley. According to Tony Payne, associate vice president for development, the tournament raised approximately $30,000. Right: The community came together following the tragic shooting of Jacob Hall and other students and a teacher at Townville Elementary School, to donate blood. Palmetto Physical Medicine of Anderson provided lunch and McAlister’s Deli of Clemson provided drinks. The Blood Connection collected 241 pints of blood from three bloodmobiles and 12 beds set up inside the fire station. Robin Bryant, Joy's husband, donated a unit of blood as well. According to Ashley Sweet, school recruitment manager at The Blood Connection, the donations have the potential of saving 723 lives. Jacob, who passed away Oct. 1, loved super heroes, and no doubt would have agreed that these first responders and blood donors are real heroes.

We're welcoming back Committed, who will perform this year's Homecoming Concert Friday, Oct. 21 in the auditorium of Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. Committed is the R&B/Pop singing group who won Season 2 of the NBC hit musical competition “The Sing-Off." Prepare to be entertained! 
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7 p.m.
SWU’s 5th Annual Run2Fall 5K offers a challenging course for all ages. Walkers and runners are welcome to participate in this year’s glow themed event! We are excited to announce that this run will use chip timing for the first time ever, and our course will be marked by USATF standards. Exercise has never been this fun! On Oct. 26, Southern Wesleyan University will welcome Dr. Wayne Schmidt, general superintendent for The Wesleyan Church, to its Central campus where he will address the Board of Trustees Chapel 10 a.m. at Newton Hobson Auditorium.

Human Checkers match this Thursday!

Run for the Badge


Run for the Badge is a nationwide event sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). The run’s purpose is to raise money and awareness for the fund that honors and remembers the heroes of American law enforcement. Dr. Bruce Gay, professor of criminal justice, has created a team for students and other participants. SWU will host a local Run for the Badge Oct. 10, 3 p.m. at Joe R. Gilbert Track and Soccer Complex. The event is a 5k that can be run or walked. Download this flyer for details and registration.

Trick or Treat!


Mullinax Residence Hall will host a Trick or Treat event Saturday, Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. This is a costume event for kids in and around the SWU community. For details, contact Katherine Hanson at khanson@swu.edu. Details can be found in this flyer.
After pastoring Wesleyan congregations in the Carolinas and teaching at a Christian high school, Rev. Scott Williams, coordinator of faith-based learning, uses technology to connect students and also faculty in Southern Wesleyan’s adult evening and online programs with spiritual resources.

Blue Hill will be open normal hours Monday and Tuesday but will close for Fall Break at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. They will reopen for normal business hours Sunday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Be sure to check out the fall drink menu, which includes pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin spice chai. Look for a special Halloween menu starting Oct. 23!

Photography


SWU provides photographic services to its departments, divisions and organizations by request. In order to ensure coverage by a photographer for your events, class activities, portraits of individuals, etc., a minimum of two weeks lead time is preferred. Requests should be made using the Photo Opportunity Request Form online.

McLendon presents at conference


Dr. Sandra McLendon, dean of the School of Education, presented at the Leadership in Higher Education conference in Atlanta Oct. 7-8. McLendon presented "Charting the Path to Creating an Assessment Culture: Assessment for Busy People." The presentation emphasized leaders becoming proactive in thinking and leadership to create an assessment culture. Higher Education leaders need "to begin with the end-in-mind" to foster an environment conducive to continuous assessment and improvement. Additionally, McLendon moderated a session on current issues regarding promotion and tenure.
United Way of Pickens County is again offering SWU students an opportunity to volunteer or intern as a VITA tax preparer during the upcoming tax season. VITA is an IRS program that is designed to assist families making a household income of $54K or less. It’s a great opportunity to boost a resume, gain valuable experience and give back to the community. October 22 is National Pill Take-Back Day. This free, anonymous service offers a way for the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Drop off sites include Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens, Baptist Easley Hospital and Clemson Free Clinic. They will be accepting these items 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.  Read more>>
Flu shots will be available by appointment through the Health Center. The cost is $30. We will be able to file on your insurance this year through Baptist Easley or you can pay with cash or check. Family members are welcome!
Jessica Rivera, Nurse Practitioner from Baptist Easley, is available by appointment from 8:15 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays to see both employees and employee family members. To schedule an appointment, contact Elyse Pippin at epippin@swu.edu or Lori Herron at lherron@swu.edu. Or call Elyse at extension 5131. All billing is handled through Baptist Easley Hospital. Rock the Box is returning for its second year at Tysinger Gymnasium Oct. 27! Join SWU students, local schools and organizations for a night of fun and games, including a 3-point contest, dunk contest and scrimmage. There will be giveaways, prizes, music and events put on by SWU basketball teams. Rock the Box starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free. For details, contact Billy Lee at billylee@mail.swu.edu.
