NEW-FOUND-LANDS: Exploring historical and contemporary connections between Newfoundland and the Caribbean diaspora

Through performance, installation, cuisine, and an exhibition of new and existing works by Canadian-based artists, New-Found-Lands investigates historical and contemporary connections between Newfoundland and the Caribbean diaspora. This multidisciplinary project explores the 300-year history of Newfoundland-Caribbean trade in salt, cod, rum and other mercantile products; reflects on personal ties and varied histories of movement and migration; reveals connections between Newfoundland and Caribbean culture and language; and includes an Afrofuturist performance and archival laboratory which uncover buried truths about Canada’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Together this engaging work brings new perspectives to the respective islands from a diversity of practices and approaches.
NEW EXHIBITIONS
iNuit blanche is the world’s first all-circumpolar, all-night festival of art, music, dance, performance, installation, food and film on October 8th, 2016 in St. John’s, NL.
Presented in association with the Inuit Studies Conference at Memorial University, October 7-10, 2016, the city will be transformed by this multi-site festival which will feature exhibitions and performances by Inuit artists (and their collaborators) from across the circumpolar north at St. John’s area museums, galleries, cultural and educational institutions and other downtown venues.

iNuit Blanche at Eastern Edge

Across the Arctic, “community freezers” uphold the idea that Inuit country food – the healthy, sustainable, locally harvested plants and wildlife that have sustained Inuit in the Arctic for millennia - is meant to be shared by all, for the good of all. Community freezers, stocked by local hunters and fishers and freely accessible, ensure that Inuit elders and others have healthy food to eat. In this two-person show at Eastern Edge Gallery, two Inuit artists originating from Nunatsiavut – photographer Barry Pottle and chef Justin Igloliorte – bring the photographic and culinary arts together to share Inuit “country food.”
In Community Freezer, Pottle’s massive photographs from the series Foodland Security, are installed in the Rogue Gallery in Eastern Edge. These photographs document the joys and challenges of accessing food from the land for Inuit living in urban settings. These images are presented in conjunction with an opportunity for the public to sample smoked char. Chef Igloliorte will prepare small samples of this popular country food with a culinary twist, paired with a distinctly Labradorian cocktail, inviting visitors to engage in a conversation around food and its importance to culture and heritage in an informal and inviting setting.
Reimagining Nanuq: The Polar Bear Postcard Exchange

Reimagining Nanuq: The Polar Bear Postcard Exchange is a collective art exchange project that extends iNuit Blanche's audiences and engages artists.
A collection of ten surreal polar bear prints created around the turn of the 19th century form the foundation for this project. Based on the accounts of European explorers, these strange and unusual images were not drawn from observation but rather originated from the captive imaginations of Victorian artists who could only dream of visiting the Arctic.
For this project, participants, including artists, art enthusiasts, art lovers and audience members alike, will creatively reinvent the polar bears on these postcards by using them to create new artworks. Participants are encouraged to colour, paint, collage or use any artistic medium in reimagining and manipulating the images. The postcards will be displayed as a feature exhibition during iNuit Blanche. Following the festival, participants will receive a different postcard artwork in exchange.

Thursday life drawing sessions will resume on 8 September. Tuesday sessions -- drawing from a clothed model – will resume on 13 September.
LOCATION: These sessions take place in the 4th floor Rehearsal Room at the Arts and Culture Centre, Allandale Road, St John's.
TIME: Sessions start at 10 am. Please come early, to be prepared to draw at 10. Sessions run until noon, and sometimes until 1pm on Thursdays depending upon demand.
COST: The fee for individual sessions is $5 per person, and is subsidized through an ArtsNL Community Arts Program Grant for which we are most grateful.
(Sponsorship for individuals and groups is possible. Student or community groups wishing to attend under a sponsorship should contact cathyandbilldriedzic@gmail.com or jcbear@nf.symptico.ca to confirm that there is space available.)
The Setup:
There is no need to register. These are drop-in sessions with no instruction.
Participants bring their own drawing (or painting) materials. Easels, drawing boards and work tables are available in the workroom.
By general agreement, oil paints, smelly-solvent media, and spray fixatives (unless water-based) are ordinarily not used in the room.
NO PHONES: In order to maintain calm and concentration during sessions, and for the comfort and security of models, CELL PHONES ARE TO BE TURNED OFF AND KEPT STOWED AWAY. This is now general practice in life drawing sessions.
COFFEE AND TEA: Generally, coffee and tea are available during the break in the session, at 11 am or so. Please bring your own mug.

There is a bus scheduled for transportation which leaves Harbourside Park at 1:30pm and will take everyone back to Harbourside Park after the screening.

The Festival of New Dance is screening Anne Troake's OutSideIn, a film and dance meditation on the body and its environment shot entirely in 3D. The screening takes place as part of the Festival of New Dance's Atlantic Dance Showcase:

An arresting experiment in 3D cinema, OutSideIn ventures into the woods to investigate our primordial relationship with the natural world.
Reframing the human presence within nature, filmmaker and choreographer Anne Troake turns her gaze on familiar terrain — her own rewilded family farm – and reveals a sublime and unsettling new universe.
Joining her on the outing are Carol Prieur, premiere dancer with La Compagnie Marie Chouinard; and Bill Coleman, founding member of Coleman Lemieux & Cie, renowned for its innovative, unbridled artistic vision.
The spacious soundscape, designed by Ross Murray, features music by avant-garde luminary Jim O’Rourke and original compositions by Murray himself. Stereoscopic photography is directed by Alain Baril. OutSideIn is co-produced by Galin Productions and Coleman Lemieux & Cie, with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation.

CREATIVE GROS MORNE: OPEN CALL TO ARTISTS
Gros Morne Public Art Initiative for Canada 150
Submission Deadline: 4 November 2016
Creative Gros Morne seeks a work of public art that will be situated in the Gros Morne region of Newfoundland and Labrador. Outdoor, site-specific work will be commissioned, with a completion and installation date planned for summer 2017. The work should: connect with a broad audience, including adults and youth, visitors and local residents; include interactive elements where possible; engage the public in ways that reflect the environment, people and culture of the region; and, celebrate the region’s place and interconnectivity within the diversity of the Canadian experience. Artists from across Canada are invited to apply.
Commission overview: one commission is available to create one or more pieces of public art with a final budget of $50,000. This includes all artist fees and fabrication/installation fees. Additional funds for site visits to Gros Morne are available.
