STANDING RULES, CHAPTER 2, Q. ELECTIONS

1. Calling Elections

a. Election of officers and Regional Directors, shall take place at the last Board meeting of even-numbered years. Terms of their office begins at the first Board meeting of odd-numbered years. In filling any subsequent vacancy, such elections shall take place at any duly constituted Board meeting after the one in which the announcement of vacancies occurs.
b. After distribution of ballots … the Nominating Committee shall ask for nominations from the floor. Candidates so nominated must be willing to serve, be a member in good standing, provide a written or verbal resume, and have declarations of support from a caucus chapter.

NWPC-CA HAS A BUSY ELECTION SEASON

The basic business of the National Women's Political Caucus of California--endorsing and supporting progressive pro-choice women candidates for elected office--was on full display in the 2016 primary and general election cycle.

All the recommendations made to National for endorsement for Congress were agreed to--including a rare dual endorsement for both women candidates for U.S. Senate--Attorney General Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Seventeen women were either endorsed or reendorsed for Congress, with only two failing to progress to the November general election. NWPC-CA also endorsed or reendorsed a total of 30 women for California State Senate or Assembly, with only three losing in the primary election and many newcomers expected to do well in the general. There is no total tally available for how many candidates for local office have been endorsed by local caucuses, but the number is likely to be large. And, of course, many locals and individual members have been very active in supporting the nation's first woman presidential nominee by a major party, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In addition to assisting with publicity and providing NWPC member rosters for recruiting volunteers, the Caucus donated a total of $17,650 to its state-level endorsed candidates--an effort made possible by active fundraising at both the state and the local levels. The National PAC also made financial contributions to many of the endorsed Congressional candidates.

NWPC pursues many important activities, but nothing more so than the nitty-gritty work of identifying great women leaders and helping get them into office. Members are urged to spend whatever time you have in the remaining month before the election and pick your favorite NWPC-endorsed candidates, contact them, and help as many as you can to get elected!
