Family Support Hawai'i Seeks “Secret Santas” for its Kalikimaa No Na Keiki

Family Support Hawai'i seeks “Secret Santas” for its Kalikimaa No Na Keiki. Imagine you are a child waking up disappointed on Christmas morning. Many families on this island are struggling to make ends meet in this difficult economy. For the parents of these families, the holidays emphasize their plight when they must choose between meeting basic needs or buying holiday gifts for their children. Bringing joy to these children by making sure each one has presents to open represents the true spirit of aloha and ‘ohana.  Family Support Hawai’i is currently seeking “Secret Santas” to help make its Kalikimaka No Na Keiki (KNNK) - Christmas for the Children - campaign a success. This is for all the children in our programs that are in need and also includes their siblings. The KNNK campaign has been making children happy for six years and provides Christmas each year for 100+ families serving approximately 400 children.

Baby Anne came to FSH's Child Development (Early Intervention) Program when she was two months old after being discharged from the hospital. At birth, she suffered from heart issues and feeding difficulties. At the age of 9 months she was hospitalized again due to hypovolemic shock and she regressed. She has overcome so much in a short time and just recently, conquered the skill of walking, which she loves to do! She's such a sweet, spunky little girl with a one-of-a-kind smile!

FSH's Early Head Start at the National Head Start Association’s Fall Leadership Institute

Last September, the National Head Start Association (NHSA) held its 2016 Fall Leadership Institute in Washington D.C. Head Start and Early Head Start Programs from around the country had the opportunity to attend, hear from senior Office of Head Start officials, and meet with legislators. Stacy, our very own Early Head Start Program Manager, even had the chance to meet-up with actor, director, and author Taye Diggs, who has recently become NHSA’s Child Literacy Ambassador!

Creativity Through Painting

Painting is a great way for children of all ages to not only grow their creativity, but it is also an excellent way for young kids to develop their fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are those skills that require small muscle movements and allow us to perform precision tasks. Things like picking up a pencil, using a fork and spoon, and building a block tower all use fine motor skills. Building fine motor skills is important in young children because these skills will be important as toddlers grow and transition into preschool and eventually to kindergarten. They are the basis for activities such as writing, drawing, cutting with scissors, and of course, creating beautiful artwork! Great job, Keiki! Keep on painting!
