Brilliant Club students at Debden Park High School work on
PHD grade work

Students at Debden Park High School have been working on PHD grade work taught by tutors from Oxford University as part of the Brilliant Club.

The scheme aims to widen participation in Russell Group Universities amongst state school students.

Students from Year 8 to Year 13 visited King's College London as part of the launch of the scheme.

They were then taught in small groups on PHD level material by tutors from various universities including Oxford.

Over the summer holidays students submitted a 2,500-word essay on their tutors specialism.

The scheme has been a huge success with all 32 students passing the course and 25 students achieving a first class certificate.

The final part of the scheme involved a graduation ceremony at Warwick University.

Year 9 student Ashwin Gohill said: "The Brilliant Club gave me the opportunity to research a topic I had no knowledge on and present it in a university-style paper.

"The skills I have acquired by completing the programme are debating skills, essay planning skills and communication skills.

"I am proud to have achieved a First Class Certificate whilst working on such difficult material."

Year 11 student Manpreet Tak said: "It was an amazing experience that has allowed me to work at a higher level and has given me confidence to always do my best."

Year 13 student Shiyue Yang said: "I hope to go on and study Computer Science at City University. The Brilliant Club has developed my research skills, helped me structure academic writing and will make my application to University even stronger."

John Shepley, Director of the Most Able at Debden Park High School, said: "At Debden Park we aim to challenge our brightest students to think at the highest level.

"The work these students have achieved at the Brilliant Club just shows what amazing things our students are capable of.

"To have students as young as 12 working on PHD material and achieving a First Class certificate is fantastic.

"As our sixth form students prepare to submit their UCAS applications to the top Universities, schemes like this give them concrete evidence to show off their ability beyond exam results and are a huge benefit when admissions tutors select appropriate candidates for their courses."
