Enriching Opportunities

Recently, as you may have read in the Stowe Reporter, two Stowe citizens discovered one of the Library’s free resources Universal Class, an online database provided to Vermont public libraries by the Department of Libraries. This free resource allows any patron with a valid library card the chance to further one’s skills and to achieve one’s lifetime goals.

“Learn Anything. Learn Anytime. Learn Anywhere.”  Universal Class provides online classes with lessons and assignments that one can complete at one’s own pace.  A real instructor oversees each class, and unless one chooses to audit the class, a certificate is provided when all class exams and assignments are completed. There are over 500 classes available in over 30 categories including Accounting, Acrylic Painting, Bird Watching, Dog Training, ESL test preparation, Photography, and Reiki Study, to name a few.

To access the list of classes, go to www.stowelibrary.org. Click on “Resources” at the top of the library page, and choose “eLibrary” from the drop down menu. This will take you to the Vermont Online Library page. Choose your library (Stowe Free Library) and then click on “Universal Class” at the right side of the page. You will need to enter your 14-digit library card number to gain access. You must create an account on your first visit to this database, and you will login for future visits. The database keeps track of your current and previous classes.

If you would like assistance for the initial setup, please call the library at 802-253-6145.

The Stowe citizens mentioned above have been spreading the word about this exceptional free resource. They are lifelong learners and have become true library advocates.

If you are exploring new career options or have a passion you wish to enrich, explore Universal Class!

Our 150th Anniversary Celebrations!

As the summer draws to a close so do our Anniversary Events.  We have had such a great time celebrating our 150th anniversary with all of our community members! We kicked the summer off in May with the Stowe High School Jazz Band and a history of the library presented by community members, followed in June by an old fashioned Ice Cream Social - with Ben & Jerry’s - complete with a Barbershop Quartet.  July found our Director, Cindy, along with a wonderful group marching in the Stowe 4th of July Parade giving away books, tattoos and pens. August brought many community members out to participate in “Stowe Reads!” we had over 25 community members, patrons, staff and board members stop by and record excerpts from books they treasured, which was used in a slideshow during our open house.  In August, we were lucky enough to have over 25 community members, patrons, staff, and board members stop by and record excerpts from treasured books, which we used in a slideshow entitled “Stowe Reads!” We played the slideshow during our open house, and uploaded it to YouTube so that everyone can enjoy it at their leisure.

We finished off our summer of celebrations in September with our Meet the Authors Event!  A panel of four Vermont authors: Reeve Lindbergh, Willem Lange, Julia Shipley and Ellen Stimson along with moderator Jessamyn West, came together to discuss and explore what libraries mean to each of them. The authors also interacted with the audience, answering questions, and inciting lively conversations. We ended our final event with cake, coffee and tea. Though our events have finished for the year  we still have lots to celebrate in the next  couple of months.  Stop by the front desk for tattoos, pens and custom designed bumper stickers and show support for the library! We have enjoyed meeting our patrons, new and old, as well as community members during our events and hope that in the coming months we continue to meet new faces and build new relationships.

For more information about our history. please see our website. You can also see more photos from our summer events on this webpage
