SHARE YOUR VOICE: Parents Are Sharing How #ChartersWork

When given the option, parents increasingly are choosing to enroll their children in public charter schools. In many communities, the demand for charter schools is far outpacing the supply. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Black Alliance for Educational Options have launched the #ChartersWork campaign – an effort to promote the positive impacts that charters have afforded communities of color. Great things are happening right here in Tennessee, too!

So, how can you join the conversation?

Nashville's Stem Prep Academy Middle principal, Kristin McGraner, pioneered a new program specifically for students who speak little to no English.

McGraner was inspired by one of her students, Edgardo, who came to Nashville unable to speak any English. She assigned a special teacher to him to help learn English and be proficient in other subjects. This made her wonder how she could help and improve the lives of more children like Edgardo.

Now, Nashville Newcomer Academy aims to have students proficient in English within one year. Continue reading about Newcomers here.

National Association of Charter Authorizers to Advise Shelby County Schools

Shelby County Schools is partnering with the National Association of Charter School Authorizers to improve its operations and governing relations with district charter schools.

As an authorizer, SCS is one of the three approving entities in Tennessee responsible for deciding whether to allow a charter school to open and operate. The other two approved Authorizers are the Achievement School District (ASD) and the State Board of Education. Authorizers also monitor academic standards, evaluate organizational performance, and ultimately ensure the district offers high-quality charter schools. Memphis nonprofit, Facing History and Ourselves, teamed up with Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School to train educators in culturally responsive teaching. Teachers learned how to use novels and other resources to aid in discussions around race, gender, authority and achievement in this country. This is an effort that contributes to the broader landscape of helping students better connect present struggles to history and digest information in a healthy way.
