It’s been a busy couple of months with lots going on to support our thriving business community here in Northland. We’re seeing a lot of proactive growth activity and high levels of business confidence, most recently evidenced by the calibre of the entrants in the Innovate section of the Westpac Northland Business Excellence awards. Congrats to the entrants and finalists who showed us that with the right aspiration and a global view, anything and everything is possible from Northland.


We’re also pretty stoked to welcome two new BIG Team members both rolling out new uniquely Northland initiatives. Both of these new roles are the result of a huge amount of work and support from our partners MBIE,MPI and NRC.

We’re now in a short countdown to open Northland’s new collaborative work and event space which provides a focal point for us to champion innovation and entrepreneurship in Northland.

Melanie Sweet as Business Growth Facilitator – Primary Industries.
 
Melanie supports the growth of firms in Primary Industries of the Northland economy and will lead and support the delivery of primary industries related actions within the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan.
It’s a diverse role that brings the growth services of MPI and the RBP together to deliver a wide-reaching toolkit to support primary sector businesses. Melanie has come home to the north with her gumboots – make sure you give her the opportunity to wear them!

The redeveloped Consumer Protection website
Do you understand how to deal with customer complaints, returned goods, fair trade and how to protect your business from scams?

Two Tai Tokerau Māori collectives were successful in recieving funds from the Te Pūnaha Hiringa: Māori Innovation Fund Commercial Advisors Scheme which was announced early August. Parengarenga Inc and Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust now have access to a commercial advisor over a one-year period. The advisor will provide professional business advice and mentoring, supporting collectives to identify opportunities, begin new ventures or grow existing businesses and asset bases. [Read more]

Far North REAP have just closed off the Te Hiku Youth Innovation Challenge. The challenge asked young people to pitch their ideas that will create more positive and safe things to do for young people living in Te Hiku. There are 10-15 prizes of $1000 – $2000 that will be awarded to people or teams with the best ideas. The prize money will be used by the youth to make their ideas happen. Immigration New Zealand is partnering with the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) to deliver an innovative new immigration product for highly talented entrepreneurs and investors.  

The Global Impact Visa (GIVs) will bring up to 400 individual pioneering entrepreneurs and investors to create and support innovation-based ventures and startup teams from New Zealand. [Find out more]

Business is easier together and there is no-one that quite understands the juggle we face other than other mums! IRD run monthly free seminars and workshops in Whangarei to help you get up to speed or refresh your knowledge about tax and business compliance:
  • Intro to business seminars - 1st Wed of each month
  • GST workshops - 2nd Wed of each month
  • Employer workshops - 3rd Wed of each month
