Water Company to Receive Technical Assistance for Water Tank Project Thanks to Help from CalMutuals
 Maywood Mutual Water Company #1, located in Los Angeles, will soon be receiving technical assistance for a water tank project from the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), through Proposition 1.
This past month, CalMutuals’ staff worked with the mutual water company’s general manager, Sergio Palos, to submit the request to SWRCB. The process to complete and submit a technical assistance form took less than three (3) hours.

EWG Requests Water Utilities to Verify Water Quality Data Appearing in Upcoming Report
 Following their recent report on incidences of chromium-6, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is updating their national tap water database, asking water utilities to review and verify the information contained within the database. Over 160 California mutual water companies are included in the report which will be released to the media and elected officials.
CalMutuals encourages our members to visit the EWG website (which will be accessible until October 31st) to verify that your data is accurate.

In addition, EWG will be highlighting the growing challenges water utilities face as they treat polluted source waters. They would like to showcase those challenges and costs in an effort to make the case for stronger source water protection measures and increased funding for infrastructure projects. AB 54 & AB 240 Board Training for Mutuals
 Every six years, all mutual water board members are required to complete two (2) hours of training on conflicts of interest, fiduciary responsibilities, Safe Drinking Water Act compliance, and capital improvement planning.
To help mutual water companies comply, the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) has scheduled a FREE workshop in Santa Rosa.

DWR to Hold Water Shortage Contingency Planning Workshop
 The Department of Water Resources (DWR) has scheduled a Water Shortage Contingency Planning (WSCP) Technical Workshop for urban water suppliers on Monday, October 3rd from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM in Sacramento.
The workshop is consistent with Governor Brown’s Executive Order B-37-16, making water conservation a California way of life. The meeting will focus on the proposed WSCP framework for urban suppliers, especially the development of standards for annual assessments, triggering criteria, staged responses and reporting requirements.
The workshop will take place at the Center for Collaborative Policy (Main Conference Room), 815 S Street, Sacramento, CA 95811.

The workshop was prompted by questions and concerns raised by water suppliers at the last Urban Advisory Group (UAG) meeting on September 19-20 at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California headquarters in Los Angeles. The UAG meeting focused on the following Executive Order components:
- Strengthen Local Drought Resilience
- Eliminate Water Waste
- Use Water More Wisely
The UAG meetings are designed to present and receive comment on a framework and key concepts that would result in WSCP that water suppliers can implement efficiently. WSCP establish stages of escalating response to a water shortage caused by droughts and emergencies.
Under the directive, DWR and the State Water Resources Control Board are to develop new water use targets and issue a proposed draft framework by January 10, 2017.

Drought Preparedness Workshop
 The California Rural Water Association is partnering with the Department of Water Resources to host a FREE drought preparedness workshop on November 3rd in Newhall (LA County).
The workshop will target small communities and rural/disadvantaged systems and include the following topics:
- Drought Preparedness & Response
- Groundwater Hydrology, Water Wells and State Requirements
- Water Conservation Opportunities (including financial assistance programs)
Certified water operators can receive up to four (4) SWRCB water contact hours. Class size is limited, so register now!
