Thriller Flashmob in Jane Warner Plaza
Letter from the E.D.

Harvey Milk Plaza Breaking News!
The Castro Community has 12 months to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza and create a world class tribute to Harvey Milk. What could it be? The CBD asked passersby at the Castro St. Fair this past Sunday to brainstorm ideas. Some suggestions include:
  • A bronze soapbox for people to stand on and speak
  • An outdoor museum chronicling the history of the LGBT civil rights movement
  • A mural, or other public art
What are your ideas?

In the next 12 months, the Castro CBD and other community leaders will be reaching out to you for your ideas on reimagining Harvey Milk Plaza into a fitting tribute to Harvey. Community leaders have been meeting with SFMTA for the past several months on MTA's plans to make accessibility improvements to Harvey Milk Plaza. This construction project will afford us the opportunity to create a fitting tribute to Harvey with some cost savings. Additionally, there is some seed money from a donation specifically dedicated to Harvey Milk Plaza. Look for information about upcoming community input meetings here, on the Castro CBD's Facebook page ,  Twitter or our website.

Supervisor Wiener really went to bat for the community on this project. Initially, MTA's position was, any community ideas in addition to their accessibility work needed to be formally submitted to MTA by then end of the year, just in a few short months. We pushed back, but they held firm. Understanding the once in a life time opportunity this project afforded the community, Scott pushed hard on MTA. The result, we have 12 months to work with the community and plan a truly world class tribute. Thanks Scott and MTA!

Make sure to keep your eyes out for the community meetings and I'll see you there!

Clean Team Also Makes the Neighborhood Safe
Yesterday I met a merchant on Market St. and explained to her what the CBD was and what we did. She exclaimed "Oh My I Love You Guys! And You know what, you've been out more lately and your team combined with the Pit Stop guys, are making the neighborhood safer. My car has been broken into several times during the day over the past year, and the last several months - nothing. My car is safe. It's all because of the extra eyes and ears out on the street! Thank You!"

Extra eyes and ears go a long way in keeping a neighborhood safe and clean. Our crew, so visible with their bright yellow-green jackets and hats are a visible presence on the street and do a lot more than "just cleaning". Another time we received a letter from a merchant who had their car broken into, one of our clean team members saw it happen, called the police and they were able to arrest the suspect. Our crew is professional, they love this neighborhood and go out of their way to make it pleasant, pedestrian friendly and safe. Say hi! next time you see them.

Castro Street Fair 2016
Another Castro Street Fair has come and gone! Many visitors, both local and international, learned about what the CBD does in the neighborhood. Our Booth touched on six of the areas in which we contribute: Cleaning, Safety, Beautification, Land Use, Placemaking & Homeless Outreach. Special thanks to Board members, Scott James, Alex Harken and Alan Lau for volunteering their time in our booth. We received local thanks on cleaning services and bringing back the chairs and tables in Jane Warner Plaza. Community input was asked for (and given) regarding ideas for a tribute to Harvey Milk in Milk Plaza.

To view our photobooth album, visit our Facebook page.
