Queensland apprentices and trainees changes

Dear Sir/Madam

Does your business employ apprentices and/or trainees in Queensland?

The Fair Work Ombudsman has recently changed its position in relation to pay and conditions for some apprentices and trainees based in Queensland. This is further to a determination from the Fair Work Commission that some apprentices and trainees that were previously covered by the Queensland Apprentice Order 2003 are now covered under the applicable modern award.

Who does this change affect?
This change only affects employers who answer yes to all of the below questions.
  1. Does your business employ Queensland-based apprentices or trainees (even if your business is based in another State)?
  2. Is your business a proprietary limited company (ie your business name has ‘pty ltd’ after its name and is not a sole trader, partnership or trust)?
  3. Was your business operating prior to 27 March 2006?
  4. Did you employ an apprentice or trainee immediately prior to 1 January 2010?
What do I need to do?
If you answered no to any of the above questions: nothing has changed and there is no need to call us.

If you answered yes to all of the above questions: the pay and conditions for some of your apprentices and trainees may have changed.

The apprentice and/or trainee rates for the modern award applicable to your business can be found on the MyEmploysure Portal.
The Fair Work Ombudsman has determined that these rates may be backdated to apply from 1 January 2014. Please call us on 1300 651 415 to understand how these changes impact your business.
