Onwards and upwards we go!

WISE WOMEN'S CIRCLE

Personal Safety Presentation - Wednesday 2 November, 7:15pm

We all have the right to safety and a life without fear. The Queensland Police Service Personal Safety strategies program asks participants to focus on their own personal strengths and weaknesses to develop strategies to maximise and enhance their wellbeing.  Participants will be introduced to the core concepts of personal safety, with topics including the right to safety; keeping violence in perspective; confidence; and trusting and acting on instinct.  The strategies given aim to reduce the risk of victimisation in a broad range of environments and participants will be encouraged to consider how they might incorporate these strategies into everyday life.

Please contact Womenspace to book your place in the circle: coordinator@womenspace.org.au

THEN THERE WERE THIRTEEN!

"The Annual General Meeting of an organisation is a powerful ritual in itself - we reap the harvest of the year in the reports from our office-bearers, we disband the current committee, and we recreate a new committee. This is a classic movement of renewal - fruition, then death and rebirth. The AGM marks another turn of the wheel of the year - which is of course not a wheel, but a spiral - a movement that gently combines circle and return with outward onward progress.

Since our last celebration at the Spring Equinox when day and night are of equal length, our beautiful Earth has moved further in its journey around the Sun, and has travelled about two-thirds of the way from the Spring Equinox to the High Spring moment of Beltane, which is when we had our AGM last year. The days continue to grow longer than the nights, light and heat are increasing. Earth energies are becoming strong and active. All life is bursting with potent fertility, and the sensuality of life and the earth is moving towards its peak.

What a great time it is to renew ourselves! To fling ourselves into the cauldron of transformation. As a group of women coming together as an organisation, one of the many potent powers we can call upon is the Welsh goddess, Cerridwhen. She is a triple Goddess - representing woman as Maiden, Mother and Crone. She is associated with inspiration, poetry, and prophecy (with what is to come), shape-shifting (her power takes many guises). She is not always sweet and charming - true power seldom is - she is strong, she will chase you down and swallow you, only to recreate you in a different form - Death and Rebirth. But in her cauldron she creates a magical brew - a mere drop brings new knowledge and new life.

And you thought you were just coming to an Annual General Meeting (yawn)! But at Womenspace, we always keep enchantment close by, and rest our awareness in the wider context of the natural and spiritual world.

We are about to hear from our committee what’s come out of the pot in 2016.

So, let us relax and take three deep grounding breaths… one for the maiden…. one for the mother ….. and one for the crone…. and plunge into our meeting."

Wendy Robertson, 2016 Annual General Meeting

SOUL AND SPIRIT
THE POWER OF DREAMWORK FOR SELF-HEALING AND SELF-EMPOWERMENT

Many think dreams are just nonsense, simply because they are yet to make sense of them. Cheryl O’Connor believes, “If all truly knew the profound nature of dreams to heal, to guide, to forewarn and empower all of us, no one would ever disregard another dream again”.

Forget the Dream Dictionaries!  Only you know what a dream or any aspects of a dream means for you.

All women are welcome to ‘Soul & Spirit’ at Womenspace, for a lively and intriguing discussion with Cheryl. Women will explore some ways in which you can use your sleeping dreams and all that appears to you in this physical reality, with greater ease of understanding; to guide you, heal and empower your Self.

Soul & Spirit is a regular Womenspace gathering, held on the third Tuesday of the month, where women discuss spirituality. A different facilitator and a new topic is chosen each month. Women are invited to participate in the conversation, sharing their experiences, asking questions and learning from others.

Cheryl, is a qualified Holistic Counsellor, Reiki/Seichim Master who specialises in Dream Analysis and Shamanic Journeying/Conscious Dreaming.  She has been working with her own and other people’s dreams since 1992. After many processes and study, Cheryl describes, “A synchronistic encounter with Jane Teresa Anderson (B Sc. Hons, Dream Interpreter), who became her Dreamwork mentor for many years. In more recent times, Cheryl has studied both theoretically and experientially with Robert Moss (USA), a world leader in ‘Active Dreaming’.

Every night, your sleep dreams bring you keys to self-healing and self-understanding; glimpses of challenges that lie around the corner in waking life and direct access to your deeper Self.  Learn how to step outside time and embark on conscious dream journeys, to places of initiation and adventure inside the Dreaming, where spiritual teachers and protectors await.

BUILDING FUND DONATIONS

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING TO THE PROPERTY IN SANDGATE?
In October 2016, asbestos was removed from the old bathroom downstairs. Then in December, builders removed the old walls and battens downstairs and closed in the area with walls, windows and a sliding door. A store room was also created. The old garage door was replaced with a sliding door that is wide enough for wheelchairs, making the ground level workshop space accessible for all women.

This room downstairs can now be used in all weather. It is wonderful to see so many women using the space.

The wooden posts and soil from under the house have made a great raised garden-bed at the back of the property. My thanks to all the women who have made that possible. It is really looking great. We have been picking Papaws and Passionfruit this year. Special thanks to Linda and Rhyll who brought cuttings from their gardens and have volunteered their time to create a beautiful garden.

Since last AGM, Womenspace have received extra donations from the Jani Haenke Charitable Trust of $7,308.57, and other donations of $723.05. On behalf of the Management Committee and the women who meet in this space – THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.  At this point of time we have $4,811.80 still left in the Building Fund account.

We need you to make the dream come true to finish off the whole area with two toilets (one being a disabled toilet), a kitchen, tiling the toilet area and kitchen, to finish off the tiling in the main room, fit insect screens to all doors and windows, and paint inside and out. We have been promised a fully built kitchen as a donation; all we have to supply is the white goods.  My personal thanks for that wonderful donation.

To replace cement, dig a trench to take the sewage line to the street and build the bathrooms, will cost us $13,000, tiling the whole area will cost around $2,000 and screening all the doors and windows will cost around $2,000. My rough estimate is we need another $17,000 to finish and we have $4,836 so we need $12,000. So my dear sisters, as I said earlier, WE NEED YOU.

My sincere thanks to all the donations we have already received. We have been able to do so much.

If every woman on our mailing list gave $10, we would have enough to finish the project. This is your place here at Womenspace, so please think about making a donation towards the Building Fund. Every dollar makes a big difference.

VALE - AUDREY PEACOCK    OAM (1921 - 2016)

The closing of an era – one of the women who lived through the Great Depression of the 1920s and World War II.

The women born in the 1920s grew up with no illusions.  Hardship, making do, resilience and happiness with simple pleasures were their hallmarks.  Audrey Peacock was one of these women.  Like many women at the time, she married a local boy she’d been to school with.  She had two children herself, and then eight grandchildren and eventually, 20 great grandchildren.

Though Audrey never saw herself as a feminist, she was actually a trailblazer for women.  When she and her husband bought a small business, the sales rep job fell to her. Back in the early 60s, commercial travellers were invariably men. Her country customers told her they’d never seen a woman sales rep, let alone a woman driving out on her own from the city.  In 1967, Audrey’s husband died unexpectedly, leaving her a widow at 46. As a single mother with a teenage son, she had to make a new life for herself. She maintained the business, though she had no experience in management.  Over the years, the business grew and today, it has passed down to the 3rd generation with one of her grandsons now owning it.

In 1968, Audrey joined Soroptimist International, a global service organisation for professional and business women and this provided the means for her to become engaged in more volunteer service work.  During her 48 years as a member, she chartered 12 new Soroptimist clubs in Queensland.  Audrey’s  life was one of service to others – she was always looking for ways to help people where she saw a need, both informally and through her service work with Blue Nurses, Soroptimists and other organisations. Directly or indirectly, Audrey has made a positive difference to the lives of hundreds and perhaps thousands of people.  She was shocked and humbled to receive an Order of Australia medal on her 80th birthday in 2001 for her service to the community.

Audrey had a limited formal education however, her lived experience through overcoming many challenges gave her a great advantage and she would have a go at anything. At age 78, she learnt to use a computer so she could write her autobiography and email her overseas friends.

Audrey was a woman of faith and spirit and while her own path was a Christian one, she was understanding of those who chose other paths.  She served in the church in many roles and became the first woman Moderator of the Queensland Congregational Fellowship (1992 – 1996).  Audrey was a great supporter and regular donor to Womenspace during the Kedron years.  The book launch of her autobiography, “Peaky”, was held at Womenspace and a copy of her book is in the Womenspace library and in the State Library.

Audrey and Bev Miles working at Open House, Womenspace, Kedron 2009

Audrey was a wonderful role model to her family and an inspiration to many, many women, setting an example of what can be done with passion, commitment and hard work.

I am very blessed and grateful to have had for my mother, this exceptional woman.
