This is an update on the European drugs summer school (EDSS) organised by the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) in cooperation with the EU drugs agency (EMCDDA).

Registration opens today

The University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE–IUL) and the EMCDDA are happy to announce the sixth European drugs summer school (EDSS) on ‘Illicit drugs in Europe: demand, supply and public policies’, which will take place from the 26 June to the 7 July 2017.

This year the registration opens very early to allow foreign students to apply well in advance for VISA. You can register from today, 17 October. Candidates who enrol in the first phase (before 3 February) get a reduction of 100 EUR (total fee 700 EUR). The registration phase will then continue until the 2 June. The programme fee includes tuition, canteen vouchers and a welcome reception. Scholarships are available for eligible students.

The EDSS will take place in Lisbon. During the two-week programme, renowned keynote speakers, EMCDDA scientific experts, university professors and policymakers will give participants the information they need in order to meet the complex policy challenges occurring in this field.

Special focus of this edition will be on preventing and reducing drug-related mortality.

Students

The target audiences for the EDSS are university students, researchers, professionals and administrators interested in working on drugs issues. The 2016 edition of the summer school brought to Lisbon academics and professionals from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, four of whom received scholarships from ISCTE–IUL and NIDA.

Programme

Week 1 of the summer school focuses on ‘The drugs problem: market, substances, use and harms’ and will feature lectures on: the global burden of drug-related problems; drug markets in Europe; detecting new drugs; and demand reduction interventions.

Week 2 is dedicated to ‘Policymaking for drug-related issues’, including lectures on: drug policies; the EU Drug Strategy; drug laws and public expenditure; and monitoring supply reduction and drug enforcement activity.

Study visits to outreach facilities and to the Portuguese commission for dissuasion will be available for the students along the two weeks. An open debate with guest speakers will conclude the summer school.

Scholarships

Scholarships will be awarded to several eligible students (50 % fee reduction). Six ECTS credits will be given for the courses and students can transfer credits to other European universities using the ECTS system.
