Tulku Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche at Saraha

Tulku Sangye Tenzin Visiting Children's Yoga Class at Saraha
By far, the biggest news this month is the continuing presence of Tibetan Lama Tulku Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche at Saraha. Everyday Tulku is leading evening practice, meeting people, volunteer teaching at the children's school and studying English.

Apart from the explicit instruction he provides, Rinpoche's visit allows us to experience what it means to practice in the presence of a qualified Buddhist master, someone possessed of knowledge, training and experience; one who resides within a living Buddhist lineage, continuously stretching back in time, through the histories of enlightened beings.

Connecting with such a teacher creates a dynamic relationship between one's own mind and practice and the living stream of enlightenment that the teacher embodies. It is through this relationship that one's own wisdom qualities can blossom.

Above all, it is a great honor that Tulku Sangye Rinpoche should visit Saraha Institute. We have to wonder at our own good karma to experience this. This occurrence is itself a blessing and a source of blessing. Because blessing is real, this is a practical matter, a precious opportunity for us Buddhist students, that we should try to meet Rinpoche and come to know him, and study with him while he is here.

About Tulku Sangye Tenzin Rinpoche:

Born in Tibet, Tulku Sangye Rinpoche was recognized as a child by masters of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, including Chadral Rinpoche and Minling Trichen Rinpoche, as a reincarnation of Jamtrul Rinpoche, an accomplished disciple of HH Dudjom Rinpoche, a teacher of the Reting Rinpoche Jampal Yeshe Gyaltsen, and an important Nyingma master of the 20th Century.

Over the course of more than 12 years of study at Penor Rinpoche's Namdroling Monastery in Southern India with many of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism, Tulku Sangye Rinpoche received a complete course of training in Sutra and Tantra completing the degree of "Khenpo," or preceptor, equivalent to a PhD degree, in Buddhist studies. Because Rinpoche is a "Tulku," or incarnate master, who is also a "Khenpo," he is sometimes also known as "Khentrul Sangye Tenzin."

Following graduation, Rinpoche taught advanced-level classes for two years at Namdroling Monastery, and then worked for one year creating and installing an upper level curriculum in Buddhist studies at Zangdok Palri Monastery in Kalimpong, India. Right now he is with us here at Saraha, visiting, leading meditation, teaching ritual and volunteering assistance in developing and implementing our Buddhist studies and education programs.
