NODUS Focuses on Bigger Picture with New SoHo Gallery

When we last checked in with Gustavo Bonet and the NODUS crew, they were using digital fabrication to realize project visions that ranged from architecture to furniture to art installations. In that time, NODUS’ reputation as a “fixer” has grown, allowing the team to move into a new space in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood that simultaneously serves as a gallery, collaboration area, and workspace. The space is designed to embody NODUS itself, reflecting the changing idea of what a workspace can be. For NODUS, this move doesn’t mean a change in the type of work they do, it just means more flexibility and fewer obstacles, and increased notoriety in the digital fabrication and design communities.

Read more about their new space, some of their projects, and their design process in Tim Babiasz's blog post.

Sports Themed Products Made Using Desktop

David Sheffield was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. This city, like many Rust Belt towns, possesses a well-honed sense of pride for its sports teams and historical manufacturing contributions. David’s small manufacturing company, Buffalo Bottle Craft, creates simple products that let others around the country show pride for their sport teams, too.

Buffalo Bottle Craft makes bottle openers concealed in hockey pucks, baseballs and golf balls. Sold with a favorite sports team name or customized logo, David sells them to individuals and also has a thriving wholesale business.

See photos and read more about David, Buffalo Bottle Craft, how he uses his ShopBot Desktop to create his products on the ShopBot blog.

Durham Public School System Invests in CTE and STEM Education

After an initial ShopBot tool purchase in 2014, Rick Sheldahl, Career and Technical Education Director of the Durham (NC) Public School System, found himself with an opportunity to purchase CNC equipment for other high schools in the Durham Public School System that would be useful for CTE and STEM education in 2016. Not only did he order a number of the smaller ShopBot CNC machines for several schools, he arranged training for the teachers who would be using the tools in their schools. The training took place at ShopBot Tools on a Saturday in September 2016. Teachers and students from three high schools spent the day at ShopBot, getting hands-on experience with ShopBot Desktops and a Buddy.

Head over to the ShopBot blog to read more about the training and the information that was covered, as well as see images of the training class and what they worked on.

Educators will gain experience with 3D scanning and printing, designing for the laser, vinyl cutter, and ShopBot. Participants will be immersed in multi-platform CNC projects, experiencing first-hand the design and engineering cycle used in digital fabrication. With an optional open lab on Friday afternoon, participants will be able to move deeper into creative design for CNC machines and have some fun in the process.

I’m a believer that one of these machines needs to be in every high school in the nation. TJ is an excellent teacher for training. I am so glad I spent the time to get to Durham. The company celebrates its 20th year. You get lifetime customer service! I’m especially impressed with how they treat their employees.

If you give people tools, [and they use] their natural ability and their curiosity, they will develop things in ways that will surprise you very much beyond what you might have expected.
