When each of us looks back at our lives, inevitably we can identify at least one life changing event. It may have been a career decision or the chance meeting with a man or a woman who would later become a business partner, a life partner or both. It may have been an entry level job that ultimately led to the C-suite. For many of the 39 recipients of the McEuen Scholarship so far, that life-changing event was receiving the scholarship to St. Andrews that would be the stepping-stone to the successful lives they have created for themselves.
The accomplishments of our recipients over the years have been outstanding. We have Rhodes Scholars, doctors, highly successful entrepreneurs, lawyers, senior management of national and multinational companies, consultants, researchers, vice presidents of universities, scientists, academics, ministers and more. The scholarship has enabled these people to make a significant and lasting contribution to the richness of our country on every level.
To be selected for the McEuen Scholarship is to receive the largest single scholarship in Canada: up to four years at St. Andrews with virtually all expenses paid and with a value that well exceeds $150,000 for each scholar.
When the McEuens endowed the scholarship in the early seventies, I do not believe they could have imagined the legacy they were creating, and I am asking for your help to ensure that legacy continues in the next decades.
When my father gave up the presidency of the Foundation shortly before he died in 2014, I promised him that I would make every effort to ensure the foundation continue into perpetuity but also, if possible, to begin awarding more than one scholarship a year.
As the scholarship becomes better known, the quality of our applicants only increases and there are more and more whose achievements merit the recognition and the reward the scholarship provides.
I would ask you to give as generously as you can, knowing you are no doubt solicited by causes that are equally worthy. We compete for your dollars confidently, because we know there is no more worthy cause in education than ours, which rewards excellence and allows recipients to broker their significant talents to their benefit as individuals and to our benefit as Canadians.
