Dear Church,

This week we skip ahead several hundred years in the narrative of the Old Testament, to the years leading up to the beginning of the Monarchy in Israel and Judah.  After wandering in the wilderness for forty years, the Israelites finally cross over into the promised land.  In the book of Joshua, we read about Israel's conquest and settlement in the land they had long been promised.  Then the book of Judges describes the early experience of life for the Israelites.

Our reading this week comes from 1 Samuel 1 and 2, and focuses on the story of Hannah, the mother of Samuel.  Hannah is child's, and constantly bullied by her sister-wife.  She's had a difficult life.  She goes to the temple and prays, fervently, but silently - though the reading tells us the words she is praying.  The high priest Eli sees her praying but does not hear her voice, so he assumes she is drunk and calls her out.  Hannah tells him that she is not drunk, and begs him to see her differently.  She is pouring out her heart and soul to God.

On Sunday, we are going to explore what this looks like.  What does it look like to pray so fervently and so honestly?  We'll take a look at the concept of vulnerability as it relates to our prayer life and our relationships.  I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
