Throughout this academic year, Swarthmore College students will be hosting a series of events highlighting the importance of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change ( UNFCCC) and the annual international climate negotiations ( COP22 website here). See below for our fall semester schedule.
We hope you will join us for a panel discussion this Wednesday evening (10/19) on Climate Change and Vulnerable Populations, 7-8:30 pm in the Scheuer Room (Kohlberg building). The panel will feature Betsy Bolton (Environmental Studies Program Coordinator), Christian Galo '20, Vanessa Meng '19, and Mike Rolli (Scott Arboretum Gardener). Panelists will speak about their experiences with climate change in places they are from or know well. The conversation will span many continents, but will also highlight the local Philly area. Friday, October 21, 9:30am – 12:30pm at The Franklin Institute - CUSP Workshop: Public Perceptions of Climate Change in Philadelphia
Although exhaustive research on Philadelphians’ perceptions of climate change has not been done, national and local studies do provide some insight. In this workshop we’ll look at research conducted by CUSP, Yale, and others, and compare it to our own experiences engaging the public on climate. We’ll also hear from Griffin Kidd, a recent graduate of Drexel’s Masters of Environmental Engineering program, whose thesis included surveying 250 local residents and 20 experts on their opinions of climate change, local risks and solutions. Catered lunch will be provided following the workshop. Please RSVP, here.

Thu., November 10, 7:00 PM, The Franklin Institute - Franklin Institute Speaker Series- Climate Change & Philadelphia
November 10th is International Science Center Day, and this year’s theme is global sustainability. This means that science centers all over the world will be organizing outreach efforts to demonstrate what we’re all doing that connects to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Franklin Institute has decided to focus on climate change, and we’re putting together a panel of speakers that evening to talk about what climate change means for Philly, and what we can do about it. This will be a ticketed, public event that will also correspond with the new season of FI’s ever popular Speaker Series. CUSP will also be coordinating a Climate City for the event. More details to come, but wanted to make sure everyone has this on their calendars. Should be a really exciting evening!
