Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands art centre presents: ABDUCTED!

Upcoming Exhibition @ Alcaston Gallery Melbourne; 29 Nov - 15 Dec 2016

"There are different types of aliens in our own country. Real aliens – Alice Springs is a UFO hotspot for sightings and the CIA establishment out here - it is very spooky and mysterious.  Walberlla (white people) are Aliens who came to this country and because they don’t know about it they are destroying the landscape with mining and industry. Our culture is abducted and our human rights are abused. Our healthy land gave us healthy food, now we have fast food and an unhealthy life. So, we have abducted our own work to show new things."

Many Hands artists supported by the mentorship of leading Australian artist Tony Albert.

Desart's Cultural Exchange

Many Hands art centre recently hosted eight artists from Shanghai; artists worked side by side at the Art Centre and took a field trip to Standley Chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The exchange explored contemporary Chinese art, working in ceramics, and watercolour painting in the Hermannsburg tradition. We thank Suzi Lyon, arts lecturer at the Charles Darwin University for her support in this project.

The aim of the exchange program, an initiative of Desart, the Shanghai International Culture Association and Gallerist Mr Yongkang Sun, is to build awareness of Aboriginal Art from Central Australia in Shanghai through artist exchanges and exhibitions. In 2014 Mervyn Rubuntja and Mr P. Taylor took part in an artist exchange to Shanghai and their work was shown in the “Fragrant Lands - Collection of Chinese and Australian Indigenous Art" 2011 - 2014.

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light

We had some fantastic times lately with Parrtjima – A Festival in Light in Alice Springs. A featured installation was a series of our large illuminated 1950s-style circle skirts showcasing the watercolour artwork of Lenie Namatjira, Reinhold Inkamala, Ivy Pareroultja and Therese Ryder. A big THANK YOU to the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education  and LUXLAB at iGLAM UNSW for helping us create these fantastic designs.

Also artworks by Mervyn Rubuntja, Gloria Pannka and Myra Ah Chee were projected onto the red sand in Grounded, one of three displays. Thank you so much Parrtjima Australia, Northern Territory Major Events and AGB events for partnering with us.

If you couldn't make it, you will find some beautiful images from the event in our picture gallery.

We had a colour demonstration and workshop at the art centre, facilitated by Natalie O'Connor, resident artist for Winsor & Newton. That was so much fun! Thank you Chapman and Baily and Winsor & Newton, we look forward to seeing you again soon.
