Welcome to the first newsletter of the Greater Manchester Local Pharmaceutical Committee.

We are honoured to be representing you and there has never been a better, and more important, time for community pharmacy’s voice to be heard.  Greater Manchester devolution, the national drive to transform health and social care, and the challenges of caring for an ageing population (many with multiple comorbidities) offer unique opportunities for community pharmacy.  Together, we are a vital part of the solution and the future.

Last night and this morning has been very busy with latest updates helping us to understand the upcoming situation with government negotiations and we await more detail on the news today which we will share with you as it comes available.

Kind regards,

Adam Irvine

Department of Health funding proposal update and PSNC response
Last night the minister David Mowat announced some plans on community pharmacy’s role in urgent care. PSNC and the other pharmacy organisations issued a statement outlining their disappointment that the urgent repeat medications scheme would only run as a pilot, and their confusion about why there was a reference to minor ailments when this is clearly not the type of national minor ailments scheme that we have all been making the case for. PSNC have been working hard alongside other pharmacy organisations to ensure that the media understand the announcement and are aware of the response on this. You can read the joint statement here: http://psnc.org.uk/our-news/psnc-statement-response-to-ministers-announcement-on-urgent-care-role/

This morning PSNC has published its response to the most recent funding package proposed by the Department of Health. The Committee has rejected the proposals and set out a number of concerns about the plans and the consultation process. You can read more here: http://psnc.org.uk/our-news/contractor-announcement-psnc-rejects-dh-proposed-funding-package/

Appointment of Directors to CPGM Healthcare Limited

Community Pharmacy Greater Manchester Healthcare Limited (CHL) has been established to:

  • Jointly support the provision and implementation of high quality pharmacy services with Local Pharmaceutical Committees (LPCs);
  • Work with Community Pharmacy in Greater Manchester to ensure a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the people of the whole of GM; through the tendering for and delivery of, high quality services with positive patient outcomes.

This is a very important time for the population of Greater Manchester. Devolution brings fantastic new opportunities for us to respond to the needs of local people via better coordinated services. We in Community Pharmacy want and need to be at the forefront of that response. We also want to ensure that pharmacy is fairly rewarded for the services that it delivers.

Applications are therefore invited from innovative and established individuals to become Directors of the Board of CHL, in line with the Rules and Articles of Association of the company. Successful candidates should have extensive business experience and an in-depth working knowledge of Community Pharmacy and its alignment within Primary Care. Transferable knowledge and relevant experience within a similar field may also be considered. The five Directors will be collectively responsible for and held accountable for the running of the company and for bidding for tenders and running services awarded.

Expressions of interest are being sought for these roles. Potential candidates should submit a CV and a covering letter which summarises their relevant skills and experience and outlines what they can bring to the company to Gill Stone by 27th October 2016 (gillian.stone@pharmacy.co.uk or Suite 9, Barlow House, Minshull Street, Manchester M1 3DZ). Interviews will be held on 31st October 2016.

  • Real-life scenarios showing the benefits of having SCR access across the care setting
You can register for this via the NPA’s webinar platform.

The first webinar entitled 'SCR – Getting started and using efficiently', was hosted by PSNC on Thursday 13th October. A recording should be made available to view shortly on the PSNC website.

RPS Quick Reference Guide to EU wide scheme 'Black Triangle'

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has produced a quick reference guide and a more detailed document on the EU wide scheme for the additional monitoring of medicines, commonly known in the UK as the black triangle.

Working with the APBI Pharmacovigilance Expert Network, this guidance highlights the importance of the additional monitoring scheme (the black triangle.) It discusses the ways in which pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can contribute to medicines’ safety by reporting any adverse reactions to medicines with the black triangle symbol.
