NOTES FROM THE HEAD’S STUDY

Dear Parents,

I hope you have had a good week.

It’s hard to believe that half term is here already; the sweltering heat of early September is fading fast in the memory as coats and hats start to appear, along with a few sniffles I notice! The first half of term has been extremely fruitful and positive and I am particularly pleased with the way in which our new pupils have settled so quickly into our school family. I hope all pupils will be able to reflect over half term on their successes and achievements, and use the holiday to refresh and recharge ready for what is always a busy and exciting run up to you-know-what!

Many congratulations to all those who took part in the recent Suffolk Festival of Performing Arts. Pupils from The Abbey achieved outstanding results across the board and did themselves and the school proud. Our thanks also to Mrs Rapsey for all her hard work in preparing the children.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our refugee appeal. It has been a great success and we are delighted that we will be sending a significant contribution in food, clothes and funds to help those whose need is great at the moment. It is a lovely way to finish this half of term.

Enjoy the half term holiday.

With best wishes.

YEAR 5 AND 6 EDINBURGH TRIP NEWS

Years 5 and 6 have had a fantastic time in Edinburgh! In a very busy and fun packed trip they have seen the Royal Museum, visited the Royal Yacht Britannia, been to Edinburgh Castle and strolled along the Royal Mile, and enjoyed the wilds of Holyrood Park. They have also enjoyed a Ghost walk and visited Edinburgh Dungeon, as well as meeting with other children whilst visiting a local School. They returned last night and will, we are sure, have lots to talk to you about, probably once they have had a bit of a rest after such an action packed trip!

SUFFOLK FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS 2016

Woodbridge and Abbey pupils achieved extraordinary results in this year’s Suffolk Festival of Performing Arts, almost seeming to sweep the board at times.  You can read the finer details of wins, placings, merits, commendations, cups and trophies by following this link; meanwhile there are almost too many highlights to select by way of an appetite-raiser, but I will have a go by congratulating in particular those who took first places, cups and trophies (many of them more than one!): Lily Cook, William Cook, Tom Evans, Amber Franklin, Oliver Laxton, Christopher Long, Chloe Macmillan, Caitlyn Maggs, Sophia Mattar, Imogen Melrose, James Phelan, Sasha Reid, Evelyn Saunders, Alexander Sharratt, Alice Sharratt,  Sebastian Ward.
LOVE IN A BOX

Half term will be a great opportunity to fill shoe boxes with presents for the Love in a Box charity that Matron is busy organizing again this year.  Your boxes mean so much to the children who receive them and we do hope as many of you as possible will be able to bring in a filled box, following the instructions on the leaflet.  Miss Theobald has given out leaflets having spoken to the children last week. Please make sure you have brought your boxes into Matron by 10am on Wednesday 2 November as the boxes will be collected early on Wednesday morning.  Thank you.
SPORT NEWS
THE ABBEY V IHS AND FINBOROUGH SWIMMING GALA

On Thursday 29 October the Year 4, 5 and 6 girls travelled to Ipswich High School to compete against Finborough and the home team. It was a fierce competition, but our Year 4 girls took 1st  and 2nd place in all the races apart from Backstroke, in which we had to settle for 2nd and 3rd places. The Abbey came away with 28 points, IHS 48 and Finborough 50.

Our Year 5 girls held their own to narrowly beat IHS.  The overall score in that year group was 42 to 44. A great and well deserved victory. However, the lack of Year 6 girls ended up being our undoing and even with some girls having to swim in the year group above their own, we just couldn’t hold them back.

Overall the lack of depth in the team allowed IHS to overtake us in points scores and we narrowly lost 113 to 117.

Well done to all the girls, they swam their hearts out. Special mention must go to all the Year 4 girls, for winning their first ever Gala for The Abbey.

If you would like to know their actual times. Please email Peter Wright at  pwright@woodbridgeschool.org.uk.
NEWS FROM QUEEN'S HOUSE
JOURNALS

All the children at Queen’s enjoyed a Journals Workshop with artist and journal maker Rebecca Guyver.  They learnt how to make their journals out of cardboard, folded paper and elastic bands. Then they got busy decorating the pages with paint, ink stamps, cut out shapes and collage. They made mini books and zig zag books to go into pockets. They wrote on luggage tags and cut out photographs that inspired them.  Each group had a particular focus around their topics covered so far this term. The children then wrote about things that interested them – stories, lists, memories or just words to do with their favourite things. It was a wonderful creative experience and the children will carry on adding to these precious journals throughout the year.

BAKING BREAD AT QUEEN'S HOUSE

The Reception children have been learning the story of “The Little Red Hen”. They have created pictorial maps so that they could sequence and retell the story verbally. Today they made their own bread in the shape of hedgehogs.
