Year 7 on the Edge
On Wednesday 12th October, 9 Year 7 ambassadors accompanied Mrs Jones and Mrs Hide to the Ageas Bowl in Southampton for a PixL Edge conference.   This event was the very beginning of our John Hanson Community school ‘s launch of ‘Edge’.  We will be arranging programmes and opportunities for the students to develop their LORIC – that is their Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication skills.

The students spent  the morning with the dynamic David McQueen,  learning about LORIC.  This is what they had to say:
  • ‘When I went to the PixL RISE convention today, I learnt that there are many words to learn before becoming an ambassador and I am pleased to be one.  The words I remembered are: Leadership, Resilience and Initiative.   I had a really great time especially when we got to meet a national public speaker. ‘
  • ‘Today I met a public speaker called David, we had a great time and I enjoyed the independence that the morning gave us.’
  • ‘I enjoyed the jokes David made… he was really good fun.  I have remembered the key words of Leadership, Resilience and Initiative.’
  • ‘The conference was fun – we listened to this funny man called David McQueen – he was inspiring. ‘
  • ‘Today was super good fun and really inspiring.  I enjoyed the games we played and meeting David McQueen who is super funny and inspirational.’
The Year 7 team will work with Mrs Jones throughout the year and possibly beyond to help launch the LORIC message and to enable all students to develop their skills and their confidence to challenge themselves.  Watch this space!

Personal Social Health Education
(PSHE) Day
The PSHE day for Year 10 students was powerful and engaging. They were involved in sessions that aimed to empower, educate and encourage them in making positive and safe lifestyle choices.

CAMHS delivered a session on emotional strength and resilience which aimed to explore the importance of assertiveness rather than aggression or passivity. It was interactive with students working in groups to explore positive and negative language choices and they had the opportunity to role play and practise assertiveness in a range of situations including conflict resolution with their parents/carers!

The AA session received much praise from the students as it was honest and moving. Students were introduced to the reality of being an alcoholic through personal stories from three speakers. The AA members explained to students about their experiences and how quickly drinking can have a negative effect on your life, the choices you make and the people around you. They were made aware of the fact that anyone from any walk of life can become an alcoholic from bankers to professional footballers.

Paula and Hilary from The Junction delivered a lively and engaging workshop on Risk Reduction.  Year 10s were invited to discuss how risky certain activities were, and whether they would do them or not.  These ranged from drinking alcohol on the beach on holiday, to leaving a friend at a party or leaving a drink in a bar unattended.  Some of these situations were not as simple as they initially seemed, and this was evident in the debates and discussions that took place.  Students were able to reflect on some of the ‘risky’ decisions and the potential dangers they will face in the near future.

Similar, to this was the ‘Readiness for Life’ session run by the school nurse. She covered a plethora of topics relating to the daily health of our students from free dental care to how to check for abnormal growths.  The idea of healthy eating and the importance of a low sugar diet got the students thinking, and questioned whether they were all getting  5 a-day of fruit and veg, or dosing up with hidden sugars. Sleep was discussed and the students were delighted to find out that they should be getting at least 8 hours a night!

Digital Detox began with the instruction for students to put their mobile phones into their bags. The muted horror that this request met with serves to illustrates why this session was so vital! Students (and staff!) undertook a stress test and then were given feedback about how to interpret the results from becoming more motivated and active, to finding ways of relaxing. Time was spent unpicking personal ‘stress’ triggers and effects.  Finally, they were treated to a four minute time out where they had to lie down, shut their eyes and relax…….

Helping to save lives in the community
Did you know that if you can get to a defibrillator within 8 minutes of someone having a heart attack they are 30 times more likely to survive that they would if you administer basic CPR?

On Wednesday afternoon 6 members of the school council accompanied me in to Andover Town centre to support the South Central Ambulance Service with raising money for both defibrillators in the community and First Responder vehicles.

Working Alongside County Counsellor Tony Hook, and in the presence of the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Hampshire, our students did a wonderful job of interacting with the public, spreading the word about this worthy cause and helping to raise over £200 in little over an hour!

A fabulous start to a campaign that hopes to raise a million pounds in 3 years and one that John Hanson will have a continued participation in.
