Parent Resources

Fall 2016

Dear Parents,

Student leadership at Walla Walla University has always been a robust and heartily fostered campus asset. This school year promises to continue that tradition. Here are a few fun facts about our talented students:
  •  In 2014, WWU celebrated 100 years of student leadership.
  • Last year our students raised $43,363.55 for “One of These,” the Global Service Project.
  • In 2016, WWU implemented the co-curricular transcript, an official record of student activity outside of the classroom (such as internships, leadership positions, missions projects). Read more about it by clicking here.
  • Six student/faculty leaders traveled to Rwanda in August (pictured here) to research the 2016-2017 Global Service “Hope in the Hills” project. You can read more about this new project below in the story "Students Devoted to Service."
  • The Associated Students of WWU employ over 100 students every year in a variety of creative positions -- newspaper editors, videographers, bike repair, Social & Spiritual VPs…..
Yes, indeed, our students are one of WWU’s greatest assets. It will be exciting to watch our students lead, challenge, and grow during the coming school year.

Terri Neil

Family Weekend 2016
Family Weekend is an annual fall event that includes opportunities to attend classes, a student missions vespers and apple fest, and wonderful music at our church services provided by our student groups. Friday’s crisp fall weather was perfect for a free ice cream cone at Bright’s in downtown Walla Walla. Saturday night’s annual “All the Things Faculty and Staff Can Do That You Didn’t Know About” talent show was a great way to get to know some of WWU’s employees.  Over 100 family photos were taken during the catered Sabbath Dinner and are available here. Thanks to all of the families who joined us for this special weekend. The families pictured here are top, Kevin, Lona, and Aubrey Carambot; and bottom photo is  Bill and Beverly Snow, their son Bradley and friends. If you weren’t able to attend this years’ events, mark your calendar now for Family Weekend 2017--October 20-22.

Library Starts Second Round of Renovations
The Peterson Memorial Library is starting a new renovation project to create study areas for students on the main level in an area where there has been stacks containing journals or books. In the lobby, new wood and glass panels will replace the current mosaic. The shelving and mosaic tiles will be saved and be repurposed. An earlier remodel was started in 2012 and has been completed. The renovations have been made possible by generous donations from the class of 2014, the class of 2016, the class of 1966 in commemoration of their 50th anniversary, and other donors. School of Nursing Accredited
The WWU School of Nursing has received maximum accreditation for the nursing program from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through the maximum eligible time frame of June 2021. The CCNE found that the WWU School of Nursing met all accreditation standards with no questions or concerns. For more details on this story, click here

'Ask. Anything' WWU Church Sermon Series
Since the start of the school year, University Church senior pastor Alex Bryan has been delivering a sermon series driven by weekly questions from the students. The "Ask. Anything" series has been covering topics determined by a student committee and sourced from social media using the #wwuask hashtag.

Bryan says, “Many college students face tough issues on a daily basis that are often not addressed in church sermons. This is a series where they are able to engage the church in matters they deem important.”

The "Ask.Anything" series will continue through Nov. 21. In addition to the Sabbath morning service, students and community members who want to learn more and discuss the question of the week can join Bryan on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Heubach Chapel. To read the full story about this sermon series, click here. To listen to the sermons to date, click here

New Space in Sittner
A new study and entertainment room called “The Den” has been developed in Sittner Hall, one of the men’s residence halls. “Students can watch movies, play video games, and watch TV,” associate dean Scott Rae says, “but it is also a place where they can do homework and work on presentations and projects. It’s really turned into a multipurpose room for the guys.” To read more, click here.

Students Devoted to Service
Our vision statement emphasizes generosity in service and our students have once again gone above and beyond in service to their community and in the world.

On October 12, nearly 400 students, faculty, and staff participated in our annual fall Service Day. They helped at places throughout Walla Walla, such as the Humane Society and the YWCA.

Each year, WWU students select a service project and have events and fundraisers throughout the school year. In August, a small group of student/faculty leaders went to Rwanda for two weeks to research the 2016-2017 Global Service project, being called “Hope in the Hills.” They are partnering with an organization in Portland called Impact Hope and two other organizations to raise money that will help young people who are refugees to receive a high school education, which is now a requirement in Rwanda.

Because of the conflicts in the countries surrounding Rwanda, there are many refugee camps and many young people who need to attend school. The public schools are often far away, and students must walk up to 8 miles along sometimes dangerous roads. To help them, Impact Hope is seeking sponsorships for these students to attend an Adventist boarding school. It costs $600 to sponsor one student; the WWU students have set a goal to help 75 students, which means they plan to raise $45,000 this year. For more information or to give, click here

Our "Surprise Your Student" program offers cupcakes from "Frosted," Walla Walla's very own cupcake shop, as well as an "Out of the Blue" and a "Stress Buster" box with an assortment of fun, creative, and tasty treats.

We also have personalized "Birthday,” "Thinking of You,” "Get Well," and "Missing You" packages, gift cards to local merchants, and balloon bouquets. We would love to help you make your student's day! For the details, click here or call (800) 377-2586.

A Note from Student Financial Services
The federal government opened the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for next school year on October 1st. They are also using tax information from a year earlier, so the 2015 tax year. This should make applying for financial aid easier because by October most families have their taxes done for the prior year. Students and families whose financial situation has changed since 2015 can work with Student Financial Services on an individual basis, after their initial award letter has been generated. For more information about finances, click here.

Try the WWU App
The WWU App, started last year, features information on upcoming events, clubs and organizations, campus services, jobs, and other resources.

It also provides a campus map with self-guided tours and a live campus feed for sharing and discussion. Students, faculty, and staff use this campus feed to exchange ideas, share pictures, find lost items, and connect socially, spiritually, and academically.

To download the WWU App to your smartphone or tablet device, go to your App Store (for Android and iOS) and search for “Walla Walla University.”

Support WWU with Amazon Purchases
When you purchase items on Amazon, you can help support Walla Walla University. As you make your standard purchases or perhaps start your holiday shopping, this is an easy way to help. To get started, go to “amazonsmile.com” and use your regular login information. Then enter “Walla Walla University” as your donation choice. The program will automatically donate .5 percent of your purchase to the University Fund which goes toward student scholarship, academic innovation and facility improvements.
