YHS PTA WEEKLY UPDATE 10/21/16
From the PTA President

From the October 13 Yorktown PTA Meeting

At our PTA meeting last Thursday, School Board member Reid Goldstein made a presentation and answered questions about current APS priorities and activities. His presentation and the meeting minutes will be posted at
www.YHSPTA.org within the next week.

Here are some key points for our school community:

* APS currently has 26,152 students, an increase of 3.6% over last year.

* The School Board recently opened transfers to Yorktown, Wakefield, Jefferson and Kenmore to relieve overcrowding at W&L, Gunston, Williamsburg and Swanson.

* The School Board will vote on December 1 on new high school boundaries that will shift 400+ students from W&L to YHS and Wakefield over the next four years:
https://www.apsva.us/aps-boundaries/

* Yorktown will undergo internal modifications next summer to obtain more classroom space and accommodate an additional 200 or so students over the next four years.

* The Virginia State Department of Education is reviewing the high school curriculum and considering the skills needed by 21st-century high school graduates, assessments, and work-based learning. The new graduation requirements will go into effect for freshmen who start high school in Fall 2018.

* The APS Action Plan (
www.apsva.us/plans) charts out priorities over the next 3-5 years.

The next Yorktown PTA meeting will be held Monday, November 14.

YHS THEATRE PRESENTS THE LOTTERY 10/27, 10/28 AND 10/29
The Yorktown Theatre III & IV classes are performing The Lottery on October 27th, 28th, and 29th, in the Yorktown H.S. auditorium, at 7:00 pm. The Theatre classes will also be taking this show to Virginia High School League competition in January 2017.  Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this compelling show, directed by Bailey Nassetta, a Yorktown graduate!  The performances are free and open to the public.
The Lottery is a one-act play by Brainerd Duffield that was adapted from the original short story by Shirley Jackson. It tells the story of a small town that holds a grisly lottery every year in June to insure a plentiful harvest for the following year. Yorktown Theater’s production of The Lottery will explore the concept of hope within the structure of this town’s ruthless tradition . . . and dare to ask the question, what does it mean to be human?
Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois

FREE PERFORMANCE: EINSTEIN ~ CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF RELATIVITY
The Yorktown Theatre Arts Department invites you to a FREE performance of Einstein!  ~ Celebrating 100 years of Relativity, November 4th, at 7:00pm in the Yorktown Black Box. This is a new professional solo show by the award winning artist, Jack Fry, and directed by Tom Blomquist. It’s Berlin 1914, a younger “pre-crazy” haired Albert Einstein awaits news from an eclipse expedition that will prove his Theory of General Relativity. But Einstein is sent sideways in a world crumbling around him. Meanwhile he comes up with a theory that changes the way we live our lives today. This is the dramatic true story that ushered in our Modern Technological Age, and certainly the story that made his hair “crazy”. Based on the recent release of 15,000 documents about this curious man, Jack Fry breathes life into one of the most intriguing icons of all time.  Please join us for this electrifying performance! Please RSVP to 703-228-5414, or to carolcadby.yhs@gmail.com

A PARENT'S PROGRAM ON SUBSTANCE USE AMONG STUDENT-ATHLETES
The Activities Department invites parents of student-athletes to join us on Thursday, December 8 at 7 pm for a program addressing the challenges of dealing with substance use among our student-athletes.
Two current Yorktown families will be the featured presenters, sharing recent experiences with their children who played sports at Yorktown but whose seasons were cut short by substance abuse.  In addition to personal experiences, community resources such as Second Chance and the school substance abuse coordinator will be introduced during this hour-long program.
Many members of the Yorktown coaching staff will be present as we all join together to address this difficult but critical topic.
More information will be available over the next two months, but we ask that you save the date and join us.

PRIME PARENT/STUDENT INFO MEETING 11/16
Professional Related Intern/Mentorship Experience (PRIME) - There will be a information meeting for parents and students on November 16, 2016 at 7PM in the Career Center Commons. PRIME, an internship program for rising juniors and seniors, is designed to provide gifted students with unpaid internships in professional organizations related to their fields of interest. Students are assigned to mentors; this allows them to gain first-hand knowledge and skills required in the professional world. Students will be involved in all aspects of the career they explore, including the opportunity to sample higher-level functions of the occupation. By working closely with mentors, students become familiar with the realities of the world of work, as well as the necessary traits for the career area. The PRIME program is offered during the summer months, in which the student needs to be available for the entire duration of the internship. Interns will earn one unweighted high school credit, as well as one college credit for NOVA’s SDV100: College Success Skills course, for 140 hours of work. Pick up information on YHS Gifted Services bulletin board.  See Ms. Wagner in room 384 for more information.  https://careercenter.apsva.us/prime/

SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES NEEDED FOR YHS SCIENCE FAIR
Do you have any friends or associates with a science background?   We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things:  (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note:  Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends.  It gets sticky.  If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email.
