BBC Proms Youth Choir on stage

Know any keen young singers looking for a fantastic musical opportunity?

The BBC Proms team is launching a new strand for 2017 and is inviting applications from young people aged 16-21 based in London and the South East.

The newly launched BBC Proms Youth Choir Academy aims to find undiscovered voices from all musical backgrounds and develop them in a choral setting. The Academy offers young singers the chance to develop their voice, explore classical choral singing and technique and work alongside professional classical singers.

Led by choral conductor and animateur Grace Rossiter, conductor David Lawrence and four members of the BBC Singers, workshops will run from January - July 2017 twice a month at BBC Maida Vale Studios, and together the group will be coached in a friendly, fun and supportive environment. Sessions will mainly focus on secular classical choral repertoire, and the project will culminate in a performance on the First Night of the BBC Proms 2017 (Friday 14 July). At this point, they will be joining a larger group (c.300) of current Proms Youth Choir members for the Proms performance. Please note that this is all highly confidential until the official Proms launch in April 2017.

Applications are being encouraged from young people who may have little or no musical experience, but who have raw talent and lots of enthusiasm. Applicants do not need to be able to read music, but they should have a good musical ear. They must also have a love of singing and a voice with potential, even if untrained and undeveloped. They must be committed to the project and be able to attend all Academy sessions.

It is entirely free to participate in this project and financial support will be provided wherever necessary. Please note that an informal workshop selection day will take place on Saturday 3 December.

If you know of or work with any young people who you feel may be suitable and would benefit from this opportunity, then please see the attached documents for further details on how to apply.
Completed application forms should be returned directly to getinvolved@bbc.co.uk. You can also send any questions about the project to the same address.
