WISE US Second Annual Evening With Industry

The WISE Memorial Undergraduate Society hosted a very successful 2nd Annual Evening with Industry at the Johnson GeoCenter Thursday September 29th. The event is a student driven and inspired event, intended to help university students learn networking skills and foster relationships with Professionals in their fields of study. Attendance this year was in excess of 100 people, with a roughly 1/3 to 2/3 split between industry/academia and student attendees.
Special Guest Speakers included Ms. Jennifer Fallon, a Process Engineering with Husky Energy, Dr. Carole Peterson, a research professor in the Department of Psychology at Memorial, and Dr. Terry-Lynn Young, a molecular geneticist in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial.
The evening of fine dining, speakers, and networking was very well-received and the Society hopes to continue its success with the event in 2017.
The Undergraduate Society would also like to extend a special thanks to all our supporters, including our sponsors, the WISE NL Board, and our special guest speakers. Thank you!

Carolyn Emerson, WISE NL Fellow and co-author of Becoming Leaders – A Practical Handbook for Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology, gave an invited Distinguished Lecture at the annual convention of the Association of Civil Engineers in Portland OR on Sept. 30. She and Gloria Montano then were featured, as speaker and panelist,  at a half-day Women in Engineering Workshop facilitated by Susan Hollett. Carolyn also participated in a book-signing for the ‘little handbook that could’, originally a co-production of Dr. Mary Williams’ NSERC Chair and WISE NL.

SSEP 2016 Welcomes New Placements

By: Carly Bigelow, Program Administrator, WISE SSEP, Photo featuring SSEP 2016 Participants

We were excited to be able to offer two new placements in rural communities this summer, one in Black Tickle Labrador and another in Fortune. Each yearwe are excited to add new and excited placements and expand our offerings across the province. A total of forty-two students participated in placements in science and engineering across Newfoundland and Labrador. Students were from nineteen different communities across the province, with two students working in Labrador, six on the West Coast of the island and two in central.
Participants working in St. John’s and surrounding areas for the summer took part in several tours, networking and professional development activities. One of these special events included partnering with Husky Energy to offer “Husky Day”. Throughout this day participants learned more about career opportunities in oil and gas and visited a number of sites including Cougar Helicopters and One Subsea. They also met a number of Husky mentors, who spoke to the students about their personal career paths in Science and Engineering. Other exciting tours this summer included Petroforma Laboratories (A SSEP first!) and a tour of The Rooms where students were able to see the new exhibit “Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou”
During the last week of the program the students who had been working on the West Coast, In Central and in Labrador visited St. John’s and participated in an action-packed week with the other students. They are took part in special tours such as the MUN Ocean Sciences Center (what trip would be complete without a visit with the Seals?) and Johnson Geo-Centre The summer culminated with Final Presentation Day where each student presented on their summer experiences in front of supervisors, family, friends and sponsor representatives.
WISE SSEP would like to thank its many generous sponsors for making Summer 2016 possible and in the words of a family member: “My niece was a participant this year and I can honestly say I watched her blossom this summer. The program builds confidence, work experience and the social aspect is phenomenal. The educational tours were so beneficial. Her new circle of friends is awesome. Again thank you for this opportunity.”

WISE SSEP Would Like to Recognize Their Sponsors
By: Carly Bigelow, Program Administrator, WISE SSEP

The WISE Student Summer Employment Program would not be possible without our many generous supporters and sponsors, during our 2016 Final Presentation Day we were happy to be able to recognize three supporters for their outstanding and ongoing contributions to the WISE SSEP

The Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd.  (HMDC)
The Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. (HMDC) has supported SSEP since 2011. Hibernia recognizes the impact of WISE SSEP provincially on encouraging young women to pursue careers in science and engineering fields and their continued support of WISE SSEP provides a beneficial opportunity to bring awareness to the importance of increasing diversity in the oil and gas industry, particularly offshore.

Husky Energy
Husky has supported WISE SSEP since 2006, through funding student placements and also for the coordination of “Husky Day” for the last 5 years which provides students with an inside look to Husky’s facilities throughout St. John’s, during Husky Day SSEP students are able to experience firsthand what a career in the Oil and Gas industry can look like and the many options that are available to them.

Andy Fisher, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Students-Memorial University Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science
Andy Fisher has shown tremendous support and commitment to the Student Summer Employment Program and its goals. Through his tireless promotion of the program within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science we have been able to attract a number of new and returning supervisors and offer our students hands on experience in numerous engineering disciplines.

EDIT FROM JUNE NEWSLETTER:
WISEUS would like to correct a mistake in the previous edition of the monthly Wise newsletter. Our unconscious bias workshop was organized and facilitated by Adam Stanley of Husky Energy. The session would not have been possible without Adam and all of his work at bringing the importance of diversity to the forefront.
