8U WA Wild Make History

On Friday, September 9th, the first-ever, full-time 8U all-girl hockey team for the Washington Wild took to the ice for their first practice of 2016 at Highland Ice Arena – a first for Washington State!

On Saturday, October 8, the Washington Wild 8U team played their first-ever game at Highland Ice arena in Shoreline, WA at 4:15pm against Kent Valley.

While score is not kept at the 8U level we must point out, for historic reasons, that Avery McCormick scored two goals and Rhylee Tiefel served as goalie (her first time!). Several players experienced their first game ever! Great job ladies!

Head Coach Anne Marie Dion worked with the team off-ice while coaching the game, while assistant coach William Lee was the on-ice official for both teams. Brian Sutton served at team manager. Included in the game roster were:

They defeated the Naperville Sabres (1-0), the Glenn Ellyn Admirals (7-0), the ST. Louis Cyclones (5-1) and the Anaheim Lady Ducks (4-1). We are proud of you for your performance on and off the ice!

The Experts’ Edge

Hockey’s Soft Skills
-- by Jessi Pierce, special to USA Hockey.com

Ask Gretchen Ulion-Silverman what she remembers about winning the 1998 Olympic gold medal – or any moment in her hockey career – and you’ll be surprised to hear it has little to do with the victories, medals or honors.

In fact, it has little to do with the actual sport at all.

“When people want to know about the Olympics, they’re really most interested in the medal and what it felt like to have the medal put around your neck,” said Ulion-Silverman, now head coach of the girls varsity team at Taft School in Connecticut. “It’s interesting because, even without the medal, my experience of the Olympics goes to every other aspect: the stories in the locker room, the jokes and the fun we had together.

“Yes, we succeeded, and yes, we won a gold medal, but at the end of the day, it’s not about the trophy or the medal. It’s about all of the fun you had to get there.”

Similarly, players at the younger age levels shouldn’t be focused solely on the outcome of one game or season. While striving for success and improvement is important, at 10U, the real importance lies in everything else a child is learning by being on the ice – especially the lessons and experiences they can take away with them.

Ask WWFHA

What does it take to be team captain?

My child is so excited to start the 14U/16U season. The coach had a great start-of-the-season kick-off meeting with the parents and players. One thing the coach mentioned was that the team will be selecting a leadership group this season. What advice can I give my child to start learning about leadership and possibly becoming a leader for this team?

As players enter their 14U/16U season, they are a bit more worldly, mature and mentally equipped to start adding a leadership responsibility to their game. Being a leader on a team is not easy. It’s not about being popular, being the best player or having the nicest equipment. Being a leader on a hockey team involves being an unselfish person who can do two things at once, such as monitoring your own game and monitoring the state of the whole team at the same time. Being a team leader is hard work).
