Have you heard?

Mysteries in the Canaan Street Cemetery.

Town Truck Repairing a Car in Lebanon?

Someone called in and asked why a Canaan Town truck was parked next to a "kid's" car and was fixing the suspension on the car in West Lebanon on Sunday, October 1st. There was no telephone number left so we couldn't respond. There was a Town employee with his own truck that was fixing his son's vehicle. There was a truck with lights and lettering on the scene but it was the "kid's" grandfather and the truck had the name of Grafton County Towing or Garage on  the side.

"Can you hear me now?"

So there has been progress on a cell tower.

Petition signatures are over 700 and still growing.

Verizon has filed a notice of intent to build a new cell tower in Canaan. The notice was filed with the Planning Board this week. The tower would be be built on the hill between Fernwood Farms Road and Route 118.

The proposed location is on a hill with an elevation of 1,380 feet, which is the highest hill between Goose Pond, Canaan Lake and Cardigan Mountain. Cardigan is 3,156 feet high - or more than double the height of the proposed cell tower site. The Planning Board and the community may comment on the site and proposed tower but do not have the power to veto the site.

The height is required to reach down Route 4 towards Grafton, and reach up 118 and cover the Town on River Road and Turnpike Road as well as the Village of Canaan and the racetrack.

The Town has asked a third party to review the coverage area to assure that at least the Village and the track have coverage. If a third party analysis concludes it will not be able to serve the Village and Route 4, the Town may not be as receptive.

There is a fair amount of chatter already that the tower would be a blight to folks on Canaan Street Lake and drive down property values. John Bergeron prepared a rendering of what he thought it would look like from the Town beach.

People living on Canaan Street can already see two towers to the west in the distance but neither of these towers serve Route 4 east of Canaan nor the Village of Canaan.

The Town has been fighting for more than six years to secure cell coverage for the Village and Route 4 and Route 118. It's needed for public safety as well as commercial activity and convenience. Finally, Verizon has listened. Everyone may comment on this proposal both pro and con but we would encourage the 700 people who were demanding cell service to support the proposal.

Comments go to:

There is talk of the Pinnacle as another option, but that site was rejected by two different tower companies as being too difficult to develop. There is talk of telling Verizon to change the location. This site was picked by telecommunications engineers. More than a dozen sites were evaluated by three companies. It is unlikely that the general public can find a better performing site. It has taken us 6 years to get any action. Verizon has never spoken directly with us. The best has been email communication. We are not optimistic that there will be direct verbal negotiation.

There are still another three sites that have been proposed by Industrial Communications and American Tower (on Grist Mill and Route 118), but to the best of the Town's knowledge, those are not yet under contract with either US Cellular or Verizon.

From the Police Department:

We are asking EVERYONE in our local communities to enroll in the CODE RED program.

It is absolutely FREE. CODE RED allows us to notify you in an emergency. Your home "landline" is already enrolled, but mobile devices are not. With the increased prevalence of mobile device only homes, we need to be able to let you know if there is an emergency.

Some examples of notifications are:

DANGEROUS PERSON - STAY INSIDE
DANGEROUS PERSON - EVACUATE
FIRE DANGER - EVACUATE or PREPARE
WATER QUALITY NOTIFICATION
POLICE ACTIVITY - BE AWARE
MISSING ADULTS and CHILDREN

These are just some of the messages that we need to be able to get to our citizens quickly. Please enroll your devices into the CODE RED system to receive our EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS. Please let us know if you have any questions: 603-523-7400.
