A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

Sweden’s most prestigious prize, the Nobel Prize was recently announced in Sweden. The last announcement was made yesterday when the Nobel Prize for literature went to singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, creating headlines around the world. The actual prize ceremony will take place in the Swedish capital, Stockholm on December 10th 2016. Please view all of the 2016 Nobel Laureates further down in this week’s Finally Friday.

But before you read about Sweden’s Nobel prize and this year’s laureates please make sure to RSVP for SACC-LA’s important Gender Parity Summit, “Fifty-Fifty by 2020”. This day conference is free to attend as we consider this an important topic and therefore want anyone who desire to learn more to be able to join us. And as it is of such importance, the day conference has already received quite the buzz in Hollywood. We are able to have you to attend and interact with us on Tuesday October 25th for free due to the most wonderful supporters and sponsors. And as we usually do, with our sponsors and supporters, we keep highlighting them not just at the event it self but throughout the year in all of our various platforms and social media, in gratitude and in this instance for making this important conference happen. SACC-LA thank you and keep encouraging you as a reader and SACC-LA member for remembering to support our sponsors so we can create many win-win opportunities between all of us.  Ms. Anna Serner, the CEO of the Swedish Film Institute along with some acclaimed Swedish filmmakers will be in LA on October 25th to speak and inform all of us on how and what Sweden has accomplished regarding gender equality as the country and SFI is indeed world leading on this topic. There will also be additional panels and talks during the day from some of Hollywood’s finest and most accomplished filmmakers, including film/TV and studio executives. This summit is something you don’t want to miss. Please join us to be part of history-making and shaping a positive future of gender equality together!

Tomorrow, Saturday October 15th, we celebrate Swedish music in downtown LA at the first ever all Swedish music festival “Stockholm CA”. You’ll find out how to join us at our Facebook page

"Voices are getting louder in the global film industry regarding gender inequality. A growing body of research and statistics points to what many have been arguing for decades: women are not represented equally behind or in front of the camera. The Swedish film industry has certainly been no different. But back 2012, with only 32 percent of Swedish state-funded features produced by women, and women directors and screenwriters underrepresented, Anna Serner, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute (SFI), decided that something needed to be done."

The Nobel Prize: The 2016 Laureates

At the age of 17, Swedish Alfred Nobel spoke five languages fluently. Nobel became an inventor and businessman, and at the time of his death on 10 December 1896, he had 355 patents worldwide – one of them was the patent on dynamite. Furthermore, he had started 87 companies all over the world. According to his will, Alfred Nobel's enormous fortune was to be used to establish prizes to award those who had done their best to benefit mankind in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel's death. In 1969, another prize was added "The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel".

The Nobel Laureates are announced at the beginning of October each year. A couple of months later, on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, they receive their prizes from the Swedish King – a Nobel diploma, a medal, and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize. All Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded in Oslo, Norway.

Julia: Cold weather

I miss the Swedish fall, since it is my favorite season of the year. It is as they say ”The grass is always greener on the other side”. When you are in Sweden you dream of endless summer and once you are here in Los Angeles all you want is just one day when the weather is colder. And even though I am a huge fan of palm trees there is nothing more beautiful than a Swedish forrest turning yellow and red in the fall. And most of all I look forward to a rainy day, which allows you to light some candles and stay in for a whole day with good conscious while watching TV series and drink hot chocolate.

Emma: Walk around in Stockholm

The fall is the time a year when Swedish nature burst into different bright colors. The leaves on the trees become yellow, orange and red and the sun still feels warm (if or when it is shining that is). Yet the air is extra crisp and fresh, the perfect combination! For example Stockholm, with a lot of nature around the corner, calls for beautiful walks around the area Royal Djurgården. Either you can grab a take away coffee in the city and stroll out on a cozy walk, or choose a café a long the way and sit down for a while. Maybe order a Swedish cinnamon bun with your coffee or tea. If it is on a Sunday, let’s make it a brunch!

Josefine: Clean water

The water! Of course, here in LA we have got the pacific ocean - and that is not a bad thing at all! But in Stockholm you can access the water regardless in what district or neighborhood you are, it is all built on interconnected islands. And also water as in drinking water - to be able to drink directly from the tap, no fuss in needing to filtrate the water or buy non environmentally friendly plastic bottles. In Sweden the water is clean without chemical substances or micro organisms - I miss drinking clean water with a clean conscience!

Jennifer: Public transportation

What I truly miss about Sweden is the proximity to everything. Here in Los Angeles everything is very spread out, which makes it almost necessary to go by car wherever you are heading. Back in Sweden I can bike across the city or travel with any of our efficient options of public transportation. This freedom and spontaneity is something I highly value and something I definitely miss when being away from Sweden.

Presenting our newest member CleanTech Invest!

SACC-LA would like to give the warmest welcome to new member and superstar company Cleantech Invest! With a purpose to improve the earth’s ecosystems and quality of life through investing in and accelerating companies, which solve global environmental challenges, we are thrilled to have them onboard team SACC-LA!

Their portfolio consists of 15 companies active mostly in energy- and material efficiency as well as in renewable energy. It is difficult to imagine which industries could be more relevant in our time. It is, however, relatively easy to imagine that soon there will be many large and very valuable international companies in the area of energy- and material efficiency that are listed in the stock exchanges around the world too. Cleantech Invest provides retail investors an opportunity to invest into a diversified portfolio of rapidly growing Nordic companies that are both profitable and environmentally preferable!

Some of the highlights from the Cleantech Invest portfolio companies are Nocart, providing electricity generation for emerging markets and is now rapidly conquering new territories in Africa; Swap.com becoming one of America’s fastest growing online consignment store for pre-owned clothes; and Enersize, making breakthroughs in energy efficiency with Chinese manufacturing giants. And that is not all: Nuuka and ResQ Club have been expanding into new European markets such as Sweden, Holland, Germany and Belgium with transformative real estate energy efficiency and restaurant food “rescuing” solutions respectively; and Sofi Filtration is making inroads into the US and Canadian markets with their remarkable water-efficiency technology. Cleantech Invest has grown into a globally operating company with some of their companies are also developing business in the Middle East as well as in Southern Europe.

At the same time, the Cleantech Invest stock has recently been stock-listed in Stockholm, which is one of Europe’s hottest hubs for international growth companies. They have also launched a series of ‘Pop-Up’ Offices in strategic geographic markets too, the first of which is now active in Los Angeles and Berlin. Locations under consideration for next year are London and Shanghai. Lassi Noponen, Chairman of Cleantech Invest is excited about how well Cleantech Invest has been received so far: “Our focus in LA is on finding investors and partners for both Cleantech Invest and selected portfolio companies, as well as supporting some of our portfolio companies’ entry into the massive U.S market. He also says “We have gotten a flying start with the help of few friends such as SACC-LA’s president and chair Gudrun Giddings, who has helped tremendously with contacts and introductions in California.”  Noponen continues: “Working with old and new stakeholders in California, establishing in LA has already proving to be a worthwhile strategic play. California is a very competitive market and also a global trendsetter but our portfolio companies stand out well. Our network of US partners and investors is now growing rapidly, we will receive a lot of visibility during the coming months and we invite US investor to take a look at us as an investment opportunity.”

We are looking forward to follow Cleantech Invest making international market breakthroughs for both Cleantech Invest and their portfolio firms during the coming months! Their social media channels on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube will be jam-packed with content and stories, as well as opportunities for you to meet up with them in their various global locations and conveniently also now in Los Angeles.
